Digital security experts reinforce that WhatsApp has maintained end-to-end encryption in all conversations since 2016. This technology prevents interception during sending, but configuration flaws allow unauthorized access by third parties. Users ignore basic features and leave sessions open, facilitating remote monitoring.

The system protects messages with unique keys generated on each device. Only the sender and recipient access the decrypted content.

End-to-end encryption explained

The functionality came into force in April 2016 for all users. Messages, calls, photos and videos become unreadable on servers or during transmission.

WhatsApp does not store master keys or allow access by employees. Regular updates fix vulnerabilities identified by independent researchers.

Remote sessions pose greater risk

Millions keep WhatsApp Web open on shared computers. Anyone with physical access views conversations in real time.

Closing remote sessions requires just a few taps on the app. The feature appears in the “Connected devices” menu and lists all active devices.

Two-step verification blocks intrusions

The tool adds a six-digit code in addition to the chip password. Activation occurs in settings, account and two-step verification.

Around 40% of Brazilian users still do not enable the feature, according to internal data released in 2024. The code prevents account transfer even with possession of the number.

Public Wi-Fi opens the door to attacks

Open networks allow interception of unencrypted data. Malicious applications exploit insecure connections to inject code.

Experts recommend using VPN in public places. Brazil recorded a 285% increase in Wi-Fi attacks between 2023 and 2024.

Fake spying scams grow 400%

Advertisements promise applications to “view other people’s WhatsApp”. They all install malware that steals data from the victim, not the target.

The Federal Police arrested 127 people for this type of fraud in 2025 until October. Platforms remove thousands of ads daily.

Immediate measures increase protection

  • Enable two-step verification now
  • Close all WhatsApp Web sessions
  • Avoid public Wi-Fi networks without a VPN
  • Never click on links from unknown numbers
  • Update the app weekly

Settings takes less than two minutes to complete.

Legitimate spy apps don’t exist

No application can break official WhatsApp encryption. Monitoring promises violate terms of use and Brazilian laws.

The Consumer Protection Code punishes false advertising in these cases. Complaints have grown 150% per year at Procon since 2022.

Security depends directly on users’ daily choices, as the platform has delivered robust tools for free since the full implementation of encryption in 2016, combined with features such as biometric blocking and disappearing messages that reduce risks when used correctly on updated devices.
