Richard Hopkins, former head of operations at Red Bull, stated that seven-time Fórmula 1 champion, Michael Schumacher, should no longer make public appearances. The statement, made in a recent interview, reinforces the privacy policy adopted by the family since the serious skiing accident suffered by the pilot in 2013.

Schumacher suffered a serious brain injury while skiing in the Alpes Franceses on December 29, 2013.

Hopkins, who has known the German pilot since the 1990s, when he worked as a mechanic, clarified that he is not part of the restricted group that has direct access to Schumacher, but that he understands and respects the family’s decision.

Circle of trust remains closed since 2013

The management of all of Michael Schumacher’s care and routine is closely coordinated by his wife, Corinna. The family resides mainly in Suíça, on the banks of Lago of Genebra, but also spends periods in a property in Maiorca, in Espanha.

Access to the former pilot is extremely controlled, with a team of healthcare professionals dedicated exclusively to his treatment. Qualquer visit must be previously authorized by Corinna.

Only a select group of friends, such as Jean Todt, former head of Ferrari, and Ross Brawn, former technical director, maintain regular contact. Eles are considered part of the family’s most intimate and loyal circle.

These friends respect a pact of silence, avoiding sharing any details about the seven-time champion’s condition. Loyalty is seen as a fundamental pillar to protect the privacy of Schumacher.

Extortion attempt exposed fragility of secrecy

The shield around the family was tested in 2024, when three individuals were convicted of trying to extort £13 million from the Schumachers. The group threatened to release more than 900 photographs, videos and confidential medical documents on the dark web.

The files were obtained by a former employee, who passed them on to accomplices. Embora those responsible were convicted, German authorities confirmed that one of the hard drives containing the material was never recovered, generating uncertainty about the fate of the data.

Family position shows no signs of changing

The total isolation strategy was implemented immediately after the accident and has remained unchanged for almost twelve years. Information about the evolution of his clinical condition is practically non-existent for the public and the press.

Richard Hopkins highlighted that any leak of information would be considered an unforgivable betrayal by the family. Segundo him, even his closest friends understand the seriousness of the situation and maintain a low profile.

To ensure confidentiality, all employees and visitors who have access to the family’s residences must sign strict confidentiality agreements. The measure seeks to preserve the dignity of Schumacher during his long recovery process.

Sports legacy contrasts with current privacy

Michael Schumacher’s complete absence from public life creates a strong contrast with his career, in which he was one of the most iconic and media figures in world sport. Detentor of seven world titles in Fórmula 1, his image was constantly in the spotlight, whether on the tracks, in advertising campaigns or at social events. Essa transition from maximum exposure to absolute isolation fuels the curiosity of fans and the media, who incessantly search for news. However, the family prioritizes the protection of their privacy and dignity above any external interests, a decision that, although frustrating many admirers, is widely respected in the automotive world as an act of love and care.

Historical friends respect decision without exceptions

Respecting the will of Corinna Schumacher is a rule followed without question, even by those with decades of friendship. Hopkins, who closely followed part of Schumacher’s rise at McLaren and his dominance at Ferrari, exemplifies this stance. Apesar of the long professional and personal relationship, he understands and accepts the distance imposed by the circumstances, without trying to break the blockade established by the family to protect the pilot.

This wall of silence extends to the entire Fórmula 1 community. The collective stance is one of solidarity with the family, recognizing the right to lead the seven-time champion’s recovery in the way they consider most appropriate, away from the public eye.

Life between Suíça and Maiorca

Schumacher’s care routine is divided between the family mansion in Suíça and a luxury property in Maiorca, acquired to provide a more reserved environment with a favorable climate. Logistics involve a complex medical structure to ensure he receives the best possible treatment in both locations.

Jean Todt’s role as limited spokesperson

Jean Todt, current UN special envoy for road safety and long-time personal friend, is one of the few voices authorized to comment, albeit in a very restricted way, on Schumacher.

His statements are always carefully measured, focusing on the friendship aspect and avoiding clinical details. Frases as “we watched the Fórmula 1 races together on TV” offer a rare glimpse into the former driver’s routine, without violating the privacy demanded by the family.
