Meta confirmed that WhatsApp will no longer work on several older smartphone models from January 1, 2026. The change occurs because the application will require newer versions of the Android and iOS operating systems to maintain security, performance and the inclusion of new features.

Users of incompatible devices will receive notifications directly in the app in advance. The company recommends that these users perform a complete backup of conversations and multimedia files before the deadline to avoid data loss.

Affected models from Apple

iPhones that fail to update to iOS 15.1 or higher will lose access to WhatsApp. Entre they are the iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

These devices, launched between 2011 and 2014, use old versions of the system that no longer receive updates from Apple. Meta prioritizes devices with more modern systems to support features such as advanced encryption and performance improvements.

Impact on smartphones Android

Several Samsung, LG, Motorola, Sony, Huawei and HTC models will also be affected. The interruption occurs because these devices run versions of Android prior to 5.0 or are no longer supported by the manufacturer.

Users need to check whether the system can be updated. Caso is not possible, migration to a compatible device becomes necessary to keep the application functioning.

List of Samsung and LG devices

The Samsung will have models like Galaxy S3, S4, Mini, S5, Note 2, Core, Trend and J2 without support. Esses smartphones, popular for more than a decade, do not meet the new technical requirements.

LG also loses compatibility on devices in the Optimus line, including L3, L5, L7, F5, L3 II Dual and L5 II. Esses devices do not support WhatsApp’s current security requirements and features.

Other brands impacted

The Motorola will have the first generation Moto G and Moto E affected by the change. Esses basic devices, launched at the beginning of the last decade, do not come with the necessary updates.

The Sony includes the Xperia Z2 and Z3 in the list. The Huawei loses support in the Ascend Mate, G740 and D2. Diversos old HTC models will also be incompatible, although no detailed list has been released.

Meta recommendations for users

The company advises users to back up conversations on Google Drive (for Android) or iCloud (for iOS) before January 1, 2026. Essa measure allows you to restore the history on a new device.

If the operating system allows updating, WhatsApp will continue to work. If this is not viable, purchasing a compatible smartphone is the solution to maintaining access to the service.

Technical motivation for the change

WhatsApp is constantly evolving with new security tools and features based on artificial intelligence. Older Sistemas do not support these requirements, which compromises the stability and protection of user data.

The Meta decision is global and affects all countries. The priority is to ensure a safer and more efficient environment for the majority of users, even if this requires transitioning to newer devices.

Preparing for the transition

Checking the operating system version on the device is the first step. No Android, go to Configurações > Sobre the phone. On iOS, go to Ajustes > Geral > Sobre.

If the device does not meet the requirements, plan data migration. Automatic backup makes it easy to transfer messages, photos, videos and audios to your new smartphone.
