Samsung is developing a privacy solution integrated directly into the screen of its next high-end smartphone, the Galaxy S26 Ultra. Recent Informações, which emerged from analyzes of the future One UI 8.5, reveal a feature called Privacy Display, designed to prevent people around from being able to view the content displayed on the device.
The functionality works by darkening the screen when viewed from side angles, both in vertical and horizontal orientation. Isso ensures that only the user positioned directly in front of the device has a clear and sharp view of the information, offering an essential layer of security in public environments such as public transport, cafes or bank queues.
The discovery was made through animations and descriptions found in Tips’s own Tips application, indicating that development is at an advanced stage. This technology is expected to be one of the main differentiators of the Ultra model, scheduled to be launched in early 2026, consolidating the brand’s focus on offering practical and exclusive features for its consumers.
How Privacy Display works
The basis of the Privacy Display feature is a significant evolution of OLED panel technology, developed by Samsung Display. The innovation, called Flex Magic Pixel, allows granular control over the light emission of each individual pixel. Instead of projecting light broadly, as in conventional screens, this technology can direct photons to a much narrower viewing cone. Quando privacy mode is activated, the system adjusts the pixels so that the light is emitted predominantly forward, causing the image to become progressively darker and more unreadable as the viewing angle increases. Diferentemente of outdoor privacy films, which are a permanent solution and often compromise brightness, color fidelity and touch sensitivity, Samsung’s solution is a software feature that can be turned on or off instantly. Isso preserves 100% of the screen’s visual quality when protection is not necessary, offering the best of both worlds: security on demand without sacrificing the device’s premium everyday usage experience.
Activating and customizing the feature
Activating Privacy Display will be a simple and user-friendly process. According to the leaks, it will be possible to turn on the function manually via a shortcut in the quick settings panel or directly in the device’s screen settings. The functionality will offer at least two levels of intensity: a standard mode, which already considerably restricts side vision, and a maximum protection mode, which further narrows the visible angle for situations that require absolute confidentiality. Essa flexibility allows the user to adapt the level of security according to the environment in which they find themselves.
In addition to manual activation, the big new feature in One UI 8.5 will be the ability to automate the feature. Integration with the Modes and Routines tool will allow the creation of custom rules. For example, the user can configure Privacy Display to be activated automatically when opening specific applications, such as banking or instant messaging. Outra possibility will be location-based activation, turning on protection when entering public places, or conditioned on connection to unknown Wi-Fi networks. Todo processing for these automations will occur locally on the device, ensuring that privacy does not depend on external sensors or sending data to the cloud.
The technology behind innovation
The feasibility of Privacy Display depends on specific, new generation hardware. The Flex Magic Pixel technology, introduced by Samsung Display at technology events in early 2024, is the key component that enables this advanced manipulation of light at the pixel level.
For this reason, the feature should debut as an exclusive to the Galaxy S26 Ultra, which will be equipped with the most advanced version of the company’s Dynamic AMOLED panel. The implementation requires a screen architecture that previous models simply don’t have.
So far, there is no confirmation whether the most basic models in the line, such as the standard Galaxy S26 and the Galaxy S26 Plus, will receive the same technology. The Galaxy S26 line will hit the market with the Android 16 operating system and the One UI 8.5 interface pre-installed from the factory.
Advantages over privacy films
The privacy films currently available on the market, although functional, have several disadvantages. Elas permanently reduce screen brightness, forcing the user to increase the intensity of the backlight and, consequently, consuming more battery.
Samsung’s integrated solution, on the other hand, does not affect image quality when it is disabled. The user continues to enjoy the full potential of brightness, contrast and vibrant colors expected from a high-end screen.
Another direct benefit is the elimination of additional costs and complexity of applying an external accessory. Películas can be difficult to install without creating air bubbles and can interfere with the accuracy of sensors under the screen, such as the fingerprint reader.
The Privacy Display represents a significant advance in offering native protection against so-called “shoulder surfing”, a common risk in everyday situations, without requiring any commitment from the user.
Practical applications in everyday life
The impact of Privacy Display will be most felt in routine scenarios where the exposure of sensitive information is a constant concern. When traveling on public transport, for example, it will be possible to respond to work emails or access banking applications with the peace of mind that passengers next to you will not see the content.
In open-layout work environments or cafes, the function ensures that confidential project data or private conversations remain protected from prying eyes. Isso increases the user’s confidence to fully use their device, regardless of where they are.
Launch and expectations for the Galaxy line
Samsung traditionally announces its main line of smartphones in the first quarter of the year. Portanto, the Galaxy S26 series, including the Ultra model with the Privacy Display, is expected to be officially launched at an Unpacked event around February 2026.
If the feature is well received by the market, it is likely that the technology will be gradually expanded to the brand’s other premium devices in future generations, such as the Galaxy Z Fold line, where privacy on a larger screen is even more relevant.
A difference for the Ultra model
The decision to introduce the Privacy Display exclusively on the S26 model Ultra reinforces Samsung’s strategy of positioning its most expensive variant as a product that offers not only the best camera specifications and performance, but also innovative and exclusive technologies that add practical value to the consumer experience.
