Nikolas Ferreira denies disorganization claims after lightning strikes Brasília rally participants

Federal Deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG) on Sunday, February 23, 2025, refuted allegations of “lack of organization” regarding a major protest he spearheaded in the federal capital. The denial followed a dramatic incident where a lightning strike occurred near the Praça do Cruzeiro in Brasília, marking the conclusion of a six-day march led by the congressman.

The unexpected natural phenomenon prompted immediate emergency responses. Authorities confirmed a significant number of individuals required medical attention, although the deputy provided a lower figure for those seriously affected.

Ferreira emphasized that the event was beyond his control, asserting that no negligence or poor planning contributed to the incident. His statements came as public scrutiny intensified concerning the safety protocols for large outdoor gatherings.

Emergency Response and Victim Reports

Emergency services reported attending to 72 individuals at the scene following the lightning strike. Among these, 42 victims were found to be stable, conscious, and oriented, indicating varying degrees of impact from the electrical discharge.

Thirty people subsequently required hospital care, being transported to the Hospital de Base do Distrito Federal (HBDF) and the Hospital Regional da Asa Norte (HRAN). Medical personnel noted that eight of these victims were in unstable condition upon arrival, necessitating more intensive observation.

The Corpo de Bombeiros (Fire Department) swiftly deployed 25 vehicles, including 10 specialized Rescue Units, to manage the emergency. This immediate action was crucial in providing prompt assistance and triage for the injured at the site.

Diverging Figures and Parliamentary Statements

Following a visit to the Hospital de Base in Brasília to see affected supporters, Deputy Ferreira presented a different count of the injured. He stated that 27 victims were involved, with only two needing continued observation.

“It was a natural incident. It was not due to our irresponsibility, not due to lack of organization, not due to crowd disorder,” the parliamentarian declared. He added, “It was literally something beyond our control, and I could not fail to come here to offer our solidarity, to say that many people are praying for them, so that they recover soon and can return to help our country.” His remarks aimed to reassure supporters and deflect criticism regarding event management.

Additional Injuries and Environmental Factors

Beyond the direct impact of the lightning strike, emergency responders documented other health issues among the crowd. Several individuals reported suffering from sprains, likely due to falls or sudden movements in the commotion following the strike.

Episodes of hyperthermia were also recorded, attributed to the prevailing weather conditions during the event. This highlights the complex challenges associated with managing large-scale outdoor gatherings, particularly under variable climatic circumstances.

Some of those directly hit by the lightning experienced burns, notably on their hands and chest areas. However, comprehensive details regarding the individual health status of each victim were not immediately available to the public.

The Six-Day March to Brasília

The protest, which culminated in the lightning incident, was the result of a six-day walk initiated by Nikolas Ferreira. The journey commenced on Monday, February 17, 2025, from Paracatu, a municipality in the Northwest of Minas Gerais state. This extensive trek spanned approximately 240 kilometers along the BR-040 highway, drawing considerable attention.

The parliamentarian’s initiative gained significant traction on social media and attracted support from various political figures. Other members of Congress, staunch supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro, and the deputy’s own electorate joined segments of the march, amplifying its presence.

Protest Objectives and Key Participants

The primary goal of the demonstration, according to Deputy Ferreira, was to voice strong opposition against decisions made by the Supreme Federal Court (STF). These included rulings related to individuals convicted for the January 8, 2023, criminal acts, as well as the ongoing legal issues surrounding former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), who faces charges of attempting a coup d’état following his 2022 election defeat and is currently held at the Papuda Complex in Brasília.

The rally also featured the presence of several prominent political personalities, including:

* Carlos Bolsonaro, former councilman
* Padre Kelmon
* Senator Marcos do Val (Podemos-ES)
* Deputies Zé Trovão (PL-SC), Filipe Barros (PL-PR), and Carlos Jordy (PL-RJ)

Prior to the final leg of the march, Ferreira articulated that the manifestation had achieved its goal of “awakening people and opening their eyes to what is happening” in the nation. During the closing remarks, he further criticized what he termed the “tyranny” exerted by STF Minister Alexandre de Moraes, reinforcing the protest’s anti-judicial activism stance.
