Apple made the latest update to its mobile operating system, iOS 18.2, available globally, in a launch that took place on December 11, 2024. The new version arrives with a robust package of features, highlighting the expansion of artificial intelligence tools, significant changes driven by regulations in the Japanese market and improvements to the system’s native applications, aiming to improve productivity and user experience.

The software package, which has been in the testing phase with developers since November, also introduces design tweaks and new customization options to the interface. The update is compatible with the company’s latest hardware models, such as the iPhone 15 Pro and the recently launched 16 series, which are capable of processing the most demanding AI features directly on the device.

In addition to the functional new features, iOS 18.2 includes important security fixes that address previously identified vulnerabilities. The launch was coordinated with updates for the company’s other platforms, such as iPadOS 18.2 and macOS Sequoia 15.2, ensuring a cohesive experience across the brand’s entire ecosystem.

Artificial intelligence redefines the iPhone experience

Apple’s main focus in this update is on the artificial intelligence suite, which introduces around 20 new features. The Image Playground tool allows users to create images from simple text commands, while the Genmoji enables the generation of personalized emojis based on textual descriptions, offering a new level of expression in communications. Ferramentas of writing were improved in native applications, such as Mail and Notas, helping with reviewing, summarizing and composing texts. Integration with ChatGPT now happens directly through Siri, allowing the virtual assistant to access the advanced language model without the need for an external account for the user. Outro’s standout feature is Visual Intelligence, exclusive to the iPhone 16 line, which uses the camera to analyze objects and information in real time, processing all data locally to ensure privacy.

Japan promotes opening of the Apple ecosystem

Meeting the requirements of local mobile software competition law, Apple has implemented significant changes for users in Japão. The most notable is the ability to configure third-party voice assistants, like the Gemini of the Google or the Alexa of the Amazon, to be activated by the iPhone’s side button. Essa functionality, which uses the App Intents structure, will be fully operational from December 2025, aligning with regulatory deadlines. Complete documentation has already been made available so that developers can adapt their applications.

This opening in the Japanese market extends to other areas of the operating system. Users can now install alternative app stores and are presented with a search engine choice screen during initial device setup. Tais measures reflect a global trend of regulatory pressure on large technology companies, with Europa being a market that may receive similar functionality in future updates, following the guidelines of Digital Markets Act (DMA).

Application Lembretes receives urgent notifications

The Lembretes application has been improved with a feature highly requested by productivity-focused users: the urgent alarm option. Agora, it is possible to mark tasks with sound notifications that behave like a traditional alarm from the Relógio application, with which there is direct integration for alert synchronization.

The settings allow you to remove the “snooze” option and ensure that sound is emitted even when the device is in active Foco modes. A quick finish button has been added, and urgent alerts are visually distinguished by a blue color, making them easier to identify in the to-do list.

Visual adjustments with new Liquid Glass design

The iOS 18.2 interface received aesthetic refinements, mainly in the “Liquid Glass” effect. Users can now control the transparency of the clock on the lock screen via an opacity slider, which ranges from barely visible to a complete matte finish. A toggle also lets you disable the effect completely for those who prefer a solid look.

This design language has been expanded to other system applications. The Medida app, for example, now uses bubbles with the Liquid Glass effect to indicate the level, replacing the old simple circles. Refraction effects and improved fluidity of animations aim to improve readability and interaction with the interface.

The Mail application has also undergone a functional redesign, which now automatically categorizes emails into tabs such as “Primary”, “Transactions” and “Promotions”. Todo processing for this inbox organization occurs directly on the device, maintaining the privacy of message content.

Compatibility and global feature expansion

Linguistic support for the new artificial intelligence features was initially launched in English, but with coverage for different regions. Além of Estados Unidos, users in Canadá, Austrália, Reino Unido, Irlanda and África of

It’s important to note that the most advanced AI features like Visual Intelligence require the processing power of the latest chips. Therefore, its compatibility is restricted to the iPhone 15 Pro models and the entire iPhone 16 line or higher.

The update was released in stable form after a beta testing period that began in November. Developer reports during this phase indicated optimized performance and greater stability compared to initial versions.

Following the guidelines of Digital Markets Act in União Europeia, the update also allows users in the region to delete native applications that were previously permanent, such as Safari and Câmera, offering greater control over the device.

What’s new in media and location apps

The Apple Music has received a usability improvement that allows access to song lyrics even when the device is offline, making it easier to follow tracks without the need for an internet connection. On tvOS, the Podcasts app now supports projectors, expanding content consumption options.

The Find My (Find) app has been updated to allow you to share item locations with third parties via links. Essa functionality is especially useful for airline baggage screening, and AirTags notifications have been improved for greater accuracy.

Privacy and data processing

Apple has reinforced its commitment to user privacy by ensuring that most new artificial intelligence features process data directly on the device. Essa approach minimizes the amount of information sent to the cloud, protecting personal and sensitive data contained in photos, messages and emails.
