Fiat has already started developing the next generation of the Fastback, its coupé-style SUV that has become a sales success in the national market. The new model, scheduled for launch in 2026, will undergo a complete redesign, using the same platform as the recently presented Citroën Basalt. The strategic change aims not only to modernize the design, but also to correct one of the most criticized points of the current model: internal space, especially for rear seat occupants.
The adoption of the CMP (Common Modular Platform) platform, also known as Smart Car, will allow a significant increase in vehicle dimensions. The Essa modular base, already used in models such as the Peugeot 208 and the Citroën C3, will be extended to accommodate the new Fastback, ensuring a wider and more comfortable cabin, in addition to opening doors for the introduction of new safety and engine technologies.
The project, internally known as F2X, is being developed at the Stellantis automotive hub in Betim, Minas Gerais. Synergy with Citroën Basalt is a fundamental pillar of the group’s strategy to optimize production costs and accelerate the development cycle of new products, maintaining a clear differentiation in positioning and design between brands.
A new basis for a larger SUV
The main evolution of the new generation of Fiat Fastback will be in its structure. When migrating from the Pulse base to the Citroën Basalt CMP platform, the SUV coupé will gain a considerably longer wheelbase. Atualmente, the Fastback has a wheelbase of 2.53 meters, a measurement that should jump to something between 2.60 and 2.64 meters in the new model. Essa change will directly impact passenger comfort, especially with regard to legroom in the back seat.
This dimensional increase should also reflect on the total length of the vehicle, giving it a more imposing stance and more balanced proportions for the coupé body. The expectation is that the trunk, one of the great highlights of the current model, will maintain its generous capacity or even be slightly enlarged, consolidating the Fastback as a versatile option for families who do not compromise on style.
Renewed design with European inspiration
The look of the new Fiat Fastback will be completely redesigned to align with the brand’s latest visual identity, with features reminiscent of European launches. The front will be the area with the most profound changes, abandoning the current optical set in favor of headlights with Pixel LED technology. Este advanced system allows more precise control of the light beam, improving nighttime visibility without dazzling other drivers.
The front grille will also be redesigned, gaining a more aggressive shape and integrated into the bumper, which in turn will have new air intakes and a sportier design. The LED light signature (DRL) will be thinner and more elegant, giving the set a more technological appearance.
On the side, the silhouette with the sharp drop in the roof, a characteristic that defines the model, will be maintained, but reworked to harmonize with the new dimensions. Espera New alloy wheels with a diamond finish and more striking creases on the body reinforce the feeling of dynamism.
The rear will also undergo a complete modernization. The current headlights will give way to a narrower, more horizontal set, possibly interconnected by a functional bar or a glossy black appliqué, a trend in global automotive design. The rear bumper will be more robust, complementing the sporty look of the SUV.
Technological and more refined interior
Inside, the revolution will be equally remarkable. The new Fastback’s dashboard will be completely new, with a focus on technology and improving the perception of quality. The floating multimedia center should grow, adopting a higher resolution screen and the updated Fiat Connect Me system, offering more features and wireless connectivity for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
The instrument panel will continue to be 100% digital in the more expensive versions, but with new graphics and more customization options. The center console will be redesigned to offer more storage space and house the electronic parking brake, which should become standard in more versions.
Fiat will also invest in higher quality finishing materials, with more touch-sensitive areas and improved textures in the plastics. The combination of different coverings on the seats and doors, together with new LED ambient lighting, will create a more sophisticated and welcoming atmosphere in the cabin.
The arrival of the Bio-Hybrid engine
One of the biggest new features of the new Fiat Fastback will be the introduction of the Bio-Hybrid system. Essa mild hybridization technology (MHEV) will combine the well-known 1.0 Turbo Flex (T200) engine, which delivers up to 130 horsepower, with a small 48V electric motor. Este system will assist the combustion engine in times of greatest demand, such as acceleration and starting, resulting in a significant reduction in fuel consumption and pollutant emissions. The system will also allow the car to turn off the combustion engine during short stops, such as at traffic lights, more smoothly and efficiently. The transmission for this set will continue to be the CVT automatic that simulates seven gears.
Stellantis market strategy
The sharing of the CMP platform between Fiat Fastback and Citroën Basalt is a clear example of Stellantis’s strategy to maximize the efficiency of its operations. By using the same base, the group is able to reduce development and production costs, in addition to optimizing the supply chain.
Despite the common base, the two models will have very different proposals on the market. The Citroën Basalt will be positioned as an entry-level option in the coupé SUV segment, with a focus on cost-benefit and comfort. Já o Fiat Fastback will occupy a higher step, standing out for its sportier design, more refined finish, greater technology offering and superior performance, justifying a higher price.
What to expect from the new SUV coupé
The next generation of the Fiat Fastback promises to correct the main flaws of the current model, such as the limited space in the rear seat, while improving its strengths, such as the bold design and large trunk. The addition of technologies such as the Pixel LED headlights and the Bio-Hybrid engine will take it to a new level of competitiveness.
With these changes, the model will be better prepared to face increasingly fierce competition, which includes not only direct rivals, but also traditional SUVs in the same price range. The expectation is that the new Fastback will further consolidate its prominent position in the Brazilian market.
Release and production expectations
Production of the new Fiat Fastback is scheduled to take place at Complexo Automotivo in Betim (MG), where Fiat concentrates the manufacturing of its main models. The official launch on the Brazilian market is scheduled to take place throughout 2026, with arrival at dealerships occurring shortly thereafter. The pricing strategy has not yet been revealed, but the model is expected to continue to be competitively positioned within the compact and medium SUV segment.
