The long-awaited release of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond for Nintendo Switch 2 brought an unpleasant surprise to a large part of the gaming community. Developer Retro Studios chose to make the game available without most of the native environmental sounds, creating an atmosphere of almost absolute silence on the planet Talon IV. To enable the full sound experience, players are required to purchase a physical accessory sold separately.

The creative and commercial decision conditions the activation of basic audio, such as the sound of the wind, the flow of water and the footsteps of creatures, to the use of the new amiibo Metroid Prime Echoes. Sem the interaction with this doll, the gameplay is restricted to the noises of the protagonist Samus Aran’s breathing and the firing of her weapons, eliminating the franchise’s traditional layer of environmental immersion.

High cost for complete experience

The fundamental accessory for restoring game audio hits the market at a price considered prohibitive by many consumers. In Nos Estados Unidos, the amiibo is sold for US$79.99, while in Brasil the official price in authorized stores reaches R$699. The additional cost is added to the value of the base game, which costs US$69.99 and does not include the figure in the standard packaging.

The mechanic requires the player to scan the doll with each new session started on the console to release the audio packages. Once activated, the system reproduces sounds of rain, echoes in metallic corridors and the movement of local fauna, elements that remain silent in the standard version of the software.

Negative repercussions and justifications

The strategy adopted by Nintendo generated intense debates in specialized forums such as Reddit and ResetEra in the first hours after its debut. Parte of users classifies the measure as an abusive monetization practice, arguing that essential sound resources were removed on purpose to boost the sale of physical products.

On the other hand, Retro Studios defends artistic choice. Segundo the developer, Prevailing Silence has been tested for over a year and aims to amplify Samus’s sense of isolation and loneliness in a hostile alien environment. The company reinforced that amiibo is the only official way to change this configuration and has not signaled its intention to release free updates to modify the system.

Scarcity and parallel market

High demand for the item, driven by the need to unlock audio, caused stocks to quickly deplete at major global retailers. Sites, like Amazon and

The lack of product in official retail immediately fostered a parallel resale market. Unidades imported products are already found on third-party platforms with prices ranging between R$750 and R$850.
