Sony Interactive Entertainment has made a significant change to the benefit structure of its subscription service, directly impacting the library available to users. Starting January 6th, the monthly rotation of the Essential plan will no longer include games developed exclusively for previous generation hardware. The initiative seeks to align the catalog with the technical capabilities of the most recent consoles, prioritizing titles that use advanced processing and improved visual resources.

This strategic decision marks a relevant transition in the life cycle of the company’s platforms, encouraging the consumption of products that explore the potential of current hardware. Embora the measure ends the inclusion of titles restricted to old technology in the monthly selection, it does not represent a total abandonment of the previous system. The focus now turns to cross-gen or native compatible versions of new systems, ensuring frame stability and reduced load times for the subscriber base.

New selection and technical criteria

The first selection under the new guidelines reflects the search for technical versatility and performance optimization. The January catalog presents works that run smoothly on current systems, with emphasis on Need for Speed Unbound. Criterion Games’s racing title combines realistic gameplay with stylized visual elements, requiring greater processing power to maintain graphical quality at high speeds.

Complementing the list, the company made Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed and Core Keeper available to service subscribers. The first consists of a complete remake that updates a classic 3D platformer with modern lighting and textures, while the second is a sandbox survival game that demands efficient data management for the procedural generation of infinite scenarios. Ambos the titles exemplify the type of software that the brand intends to prioritize to add value to the subscription.

Library access and compatibility

The change in eligibility criteria for monthly games does not affect content already redeemed by users in the past. Todos titles from previous generations added to digital libraries remain available for download and reproduction, as long as the service subscription remains active. The preservation of access to old games remains assured, ensuring that the investment made by players over the years is not lost.

With this new policy, the company gains flexibility to negotiate and select future titles that offer native support or tangible improvements to current platforms. The movement follows a natural trend in the video game industry, where legacy support is maintained via backwards compatibility, while the main incentives aim to encourage the adoption of the latest technologies available on the market.
