Apple announced the iPhone 17e with several improvements over the previous iPhone 16e model, including larger initial storage, new A19 chip and MagSafe support. The device hits the Japanese market with a starting price of 99,800 yen for the 256 GB version, eliminating the 128 GB option present in its predecessor. The updates focus on performance, durability and camera features while maintaining the compact 6.1-inch design.

The new model weighs 169 grams, just 2 grams more than the iPhone 16e, and maintains identical dimensions of 146.7 mm x 71.5 mm x 7.80 mm. The Super Retina XDR OLED screen continues with a resolution of 2532 x 1170 pixels and a maximum brightness of 1200 nits in HDR. The front protection evolves to Ceramic Shield 2, which offers three times greater scratch resistance and better anti-reflective performance.

Available colors include matte black and white, with the unique addition of soft pink. The device exclusively adopts eSIM, allowing up to eight stored and two active profiles simultaneously, with no physical SIM support in domestic sales on Japão. Essa change aligns the model with the main iPhone 17 line.

Improved performance specifications

The iPhone 17e incorporates the A19 chip with a six-core CPU, two of which are high-performance and four are high-efficiency. The GPU has four cores and dedicated neural accelerators, in addition to a 16-core neural engine. Hardware-accelerated ray tracing support improves graphics in games and applications. CPU performance reaches up to twice the speed seen on the iPhone 11.

The C1X modem offers twice the speed of the C1 on the iPhone 16e and consumes 30% less energy compared to the modem on the previous generation Pro models. Esses advancements contribute to greater energy efficiency and improved 5G connectivity. Support for Apple Intelligence remains present, ensuring compatibility with artificial intelligence resources.

Camera with new features in portraits

The rear camera maintains the main 48 MP Fusion sensor with f/1.6 aperture and 2x telephoto option at 52 mm. Digital zoom reaches 10x and video reaches 4K at 60 fps with Dolby Vision. The model adds next-generation portrait mode with focus function and subject depth control.

The 12MP TrueDepth front camera gets the same advanced portrait upgrade, including focus and depth control. Esses features allow for more precise adjustments to photos and videos. The system continues to lack the 18 MP front camera present in other models in the iPhone 17 line.

Expanded charging and connectivity

MagSafe support enables wireless charging at up to 20W, a significant improvement over the iPhone 16e’s 7.5W Qi charging. Essa inclusion facilitates the use of magnetic accessories and speeds up recharging. NFC and FeliCa support remains for payments and local services on the Japão.

5G, 4G LTE, 3G and 2G connectivity bands follow broad support lists, ensuring global compatibility. The Face ID remains the primary biometrics method. The device maintains resistance to water and dust, in line with the line’s standards.

Storage and pricing comparison

The storage strategy starts at 256 GB, with 512 GB options. Prices are 99,800 yen for 256GB and 134,800 yen for 512GB. On the iPhone 16e, the variants were 99,800 yen for 128GB, 114,800 yen for 256GB, and 144,800 yen for 512GB.

This configuration reduces cost for higher capacities and eliminates lower input. Consumers gain more internal space without a proportional increase in the initial price. The change reflects market trends toward larger file sizes in photos and videos.

iPhone 17e maintains a focus on everyday usability with targeted upgrades. The evolutions in chip, camera and charging position the model as a balanced option in the intermediate segment.
