New York Yankees defeated San Francisco Giants 7-0 in the opening match of the 2026 Major League Baseball season held at Oracle Park in São Francisco. José Caballero, shortstop of Yankees, made the first official challenge to Sistema Automatizado of Bolas and Strikes, known as ABS, in the fourth inning of the match played on Wednesday night. The appeal was rejected after analysis of the 12 Hawk-Eye cameras, which confirmed the strike call by human referee Bill Miller.

Caballero contested a 90.7 mph pitch thrown by Logan Webb into the top inside corner of the strike zone. The player tapped his helmet immediately after the initial decision and activated the challenge available to the teams. The automated system validated the original marking and displayed the graphic on the stadium scoreboard, marking the league’s historic moment.

Debut of the automated system in the opening match

ABS has been tested in the minor leagues since 2019 and applied in major league spring training in 2025 and 2026. Cada team starts the game with two challenges to question ball or strike calls. Successful Desafios do not consume the available limit. The technology combines the human judgment of the referee with the precision of tracking cameras.

Caballero drove in the Yankees’s first run with a single in the second inning. Logo later, the visiting team scored five runs in that same inning against Webb. The Giants pitcher recorded his 1,000th career strikeout during the fourth inning, a moment close to the challenge.

  • The next pitch after the challenge was also scored as a strike.
  • Caballero chose not to contest the second consecutive call.
  • The challenge strategy considers the context of the match and the limited number of appeals.

Reactions from those involved to the new challenge system

Aaron Boone, coach of Yankees, expressed support for ABS before the start of the game. Ele spoke to players about the importance of discussing challenge decisions in advance. Boone highlighted that the team intends to adapt well to the process and continue to evolve throughout the season.

San Francisco Giants’s new coach, Tony Vitello, admitted having consulted information about the referees on the morning of the match. Ele mentioned an initial reaction of surprise upon discovering that the automated system would be in operation. Vitello came from Universidade from Tennessee with no prior experience as a professional MLB player or coach.

Season opening performance details

Webb started the fourth inning with the contested pitch. Yankees was already leading 5-0 at that point in the match. The shutout victory represented the Yankees’s first season-opening triumph away from home since 1967.

Caballero did not hesitate to launch the challenge. Ele commented that he believed the pitch was a little higher than what the graph showed. The player evaluated the system as positive for keeping everyone involved responsible and allowing verification of the accuracy of calls.

Initial impact of Hawk-Eye technology on the game

Umpire Bill Miller, in the major league since 1997, made the initial strike call. The cameras confirmed the decision in real time. The graphic displayed on Oracle Park allowed fans and players to visualize the result of the challenge.

Coaches from both teams indicated that they still intend to discuss decisions with the referees. Alguns stated that they will find ways to question calls even with the new system. The strategy involves analyzing the game situation before using limited challenges.

Adaptation of teams to the challenge process

Boone emphasized the need for clear communication with staff about the use of ABS. Ele expects the team to do well with the system throughout the season. The technician noted that initial perceptions can evolve with accumulated experience.

Caballero recognized the value of the tool for checking strike zone accuracy. Ele expressed a desire for success in the appeal, although the first was rejected. The player highlighted that the system offers the opportunity for concrete analysis of calls.

New York Yankees dominated the game from the start with a run of six hitters reaching base in the second inning. Trent Grisham contributed a two-run triple at that point. Max Fried threw efficiently for Yankees, maintaining the shutout.
