The golden dress worn by Rainha Alexandra at the 1902 coronation reaches the public in Edimburgo. The piece, adorned with hundreds of sequins, was created to reflect electric light in the first coronation illuminated in this way. The exhibition opens this Friday at Galeria of Rei, at Palácio of Holyroodhouse.

The clothing is part of the exhibition “The Eduardianos: Era by Elegância”. Ela highlights the royal couple’s opulent style at the beginning of the 20th century. Conservadores dedicated over 100 hours to restoration before opening.

Vestido designed to shine with new technology

Female-led Parisian fashion house Morin Blossier designed the costume. The gold fabric replaced the traditional white. Jornais of the time recorded the effect: the queen appeared in an extraordinary glow of golden light during the ceremony at Abadia of Westminster in August 1902.

The set also included a mauve velvet cloak. The choice of gold was seen as innovative for the occasion. Electric lighting then marked a new development in the history of British coronations.

The couple was known for frequent travel and a taste for luxury. Imagens from the trip to Oriente Médio, recorded by photographer Francis Bedford, appears in the exhibition. One of them shows Eduardo in front of Esfinge in Gizé, with Grande Pirâmide in the background.

Curator Kathryn Jones highlighted fidelity to tradition combined with personal touches. Alexandra opted for something different than expected and the result impressed observers at the time. The dress has darkened over the years, but the original descriptions preserve the visual impact.
