The digital rights management system that has generated concern among Sony console owners in recent days may have a strictly administrative purpose. Novas evidence suggests that the periodic validation requirement is not a permanent restriction on offline use, but a mechanism to protect the digital store against abuse during the legal purchase withdrawal period.

The discovery came from a technical analysis carried out on the PlayStation 5’s file structure. The behavior of game licenses purchased from March 2026 onwards indicates a change in the way the console authorizes access to titles in the first few days after payment. Instead of immediate lifetime permission, the system initially grants temporary access.

Temporary Licença protects system against refund abuse

Analysis conducted by independent researcher andshrew, a member of the ResetERA community, revealed that the console automatically installs a license file for all content linked to the user’s account. The difference with the recent update lies in the validity of this initial file, which is now exactly 30 days for new purchases on the PlayStation Store.

The investigation detailed that this lock coincides with the 14-day refund window offered by Sony for digital content. Apparently, the hardware requests an online check to confirm that the user has not requested a refund of the amount paid before converting the license into a definitive format.

  • Jogos purchased after March 2026 receive an initial 30-day license.
  • The system checks the validity of the purchase via PlayStation Network after two weeks.
  • Permanent Licenças are issued automatically after the end of the refund period.
  • PlayStation Títulos Plus maintains different validation rules depending on the plan.
  • Consoles defined as primary still requires the first validation to release offline mode.

Testes hands-on confirm file conversion after 14 days

Para To validate the hypothesis, tests were carried out with different software purchased on different dates during the month of April. In the first scenario, a game purchased on April 9 had the initial 30-day license, but had its status changed to “indefinite duration” shortly after completing 16 days from the original transaction date.

Já in a second test with a security purchased on April 27th, the system kept the 30-day restriction active. The fundamental difference between the two cases is the time required for the consumer’s right to repentance to expire in the Japanese company’s database. Once the 14-day deadline is passed, the console communicates with the servers and removes the need for new monthly validations for that specific product.

Content management in the Sony ecosystem separates the installation of game files from execution authorization. Mesmo software is present on the device’s SSD, the security processor requires a valid digital certificate to allow the application to start. Antes of this change, outright purchases generated certificates without an expiration date at the time of download.

Atualmente, the process seems more cautious to prevent users from purchasing a game, downloading the content, disconnecting the console from the internet and requesting a refund via browser. Sem the 30-day lock, the player could keep the title running offline indefinitely while the money returned to their bank account. The new protocol closes this technical gap without harming those who use the console legitimately and constantly.

Sony remains silent on changes to digital infrastructure

Apesar of the technical discoveries detailed by members of the technology community, the manufacturer has not yet published an official note explaining the change to its customers. Essa’s lack of direct communication was what prompted the initial rumors that Sony was implementing a forced “rental” system or a mandatory permanent connection for all future digital games.

Especialistas in the industry believe that transparency about how DRM works would help calm the user base. The current policy appears to be a necessary evolution for the platform’s financial security, especially with the growth of digital sales in relation to physical media. Contudo, while there is no detailed statement, the community’s interpretation remains based on reverse engineering and observation of operating system behavior patterns.
