Nintendo surprised fans by announcing a complete remake of Star Fox 64 for Nintendo Switch 2 during a late-night Star Fox Direct broadcast. The game hits the market on June 25, 2026, priced at €49.99 in the digital version and €59.99 in the physical edition, marking the first major launch of the franchise since Star Fox Zero in 2016. The announcement was confirmed just ten minutes before the broadcast, transforming the event into a mini-launch that reinforces the strategic importance of the title to accompany the new hybrid console.

Gameplay preserves the classic formula with innovations

The remake maintains the essence of the rail shooter where the player pilots Fox McCloud’s Arwing via the Lylat system. The experience alternates between aerial combat, land operations aboard the Landmaster and aquatic sequences in the Blue Marine, offering variety in gameplay mechanics. The controls take advantage of the Joy-Con 2’s mouse mode, bringing unprecedented aiming precision to the series, while an asymmetrical cooperative mode allows one player to pilot the ship while another exclusively controls the shooting.

The campaign adds new cinematic scenes and features three distinct difficulty levels. Essa’s approach combines nostalgia with modernization, keeping what worked in the original while expanding the experience for new players and veterans simultaneously.

Cinco game modes expand available content

  • Modo Campanha with new scenarios and progressive difficulties
  • Modo Desafio with alternate objectives and competitive scoring
  • Modo Batalha for up to eight players in 4v4 clashes between Star Fox and Star Wolf
  • GameChat with 3D avatars and augmented reality filters during matches
  • GameShare for local sharing via a single cartridge

Batalha mode works both online and locally, with three distinct maps and customizable rules. Built-in voice chat replicates players’ facial expressions through augmented reality filters, creating a more immersive social experience. Essa’s diversity of modes positions the title as a complete proposal for different types of players.

Strategic Preço reflects market test

The launch price is deliberately below the standard range of AAA games for Switch 2, which normally cost €79.99 on Europa. Remakes and Nintendo usually sell for €59.99, making this project 20% cheaper than the company average. The reduced pricing strategy suggests that Nintendo is testing the market’s appetite for nostalgic franchises on new hardware. Se Star Fox finds its target audience of experienced gamers and newcomers, the path will be open for larger original titles during 2026.

Joy-Con 2 offers advanced technology for new experience

New controls include a magnetic docking system, larger analog joysticks and enlarged ZL/ZR triggers. Sensores integrated optics enable functionality similar to that of a computer mouse, a central element to the remake’s pointing mode. The dedicated C button facilitates access to GameChat without the need to map additional functions, simplifying interaction during matches.

The 500 mAh battery offers up to twenty hours of battery life per charge, rechargeable via the console itself or dedicated base. Acelerômetro, gyroscope and mouse sensor complete the feature set, with infrared removed from this generation. Essa technical configuration was specifically developed to enhance the remake experience.

Dez years of absence reinforce strategic return

The last relevant entry in the series, Star Fox Zero, was launched in 2016 for Wii U without achieving significant sales figures. Entre that release and this announcement, the franchise has remained out of the spotlight, generating constant rumors about a possible return. The choice of a remake over an unreleased title reflects a conservative decision given the proven demand from fans. Star Fox 64 has remained a nostalgic reference point since 1997, with a remastered version for 3DS in 2011 that reached more than one million copies sold, proving the commercial potential of the franchise.
