Nintendo revealed the new Star Fox on Wednesday with few advance details. The game arrives on June 25th for Nintendo Switch 2 and resumes the formula of Star Fox 64, released in 1997 for Nintendo 64. The franchise returns after a decade absent from the company’s main releases.

Star Fox (2026) builds heavily on the 90s classic, but with fresh graphical and mechanical upgrades. Trata is a reimagining that marks the fifth main release in the series involving versions or recreations of the original game, considering technical variations.

Histórico series releases

The Star Fox franchise began in 1993 on Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The first game revolutionized the graphics technology of its time by bringing a rail shooter with unique animal characters. Fox McCloud and his teammates won over fans immediately.

Star Fox 64 redefined the genre seven years later. Quando the direct sequel Star Fox 2 was canceled shortly before release mainly due to the rise of rival consoles such as the PlayStation 1 Nintendo chose to reboot the original with improved graphics. The N64 version established itself as the most acclaimed in the series.

The full version list includes:

  • Star Fox (1993) — SNES, the original game that started it all
  • Star Fox 64 (1997) — Nintendo 64, still considered one of the best games on the platform
  • Star Fox 64 3D (2011) — Nintendo 3DS, port with 3D visual redesign
  • Star Fox Zero (2016) — Wii U, collaboration with PlatinumGames and use of motion controls
  • Star Fox (2026) — Nintendo Switch 2, current version with 4K and new mechanics

What changes in the new game

The new Star Fox brings significant technical improvements. The graphics run in 4K resolution, offering a considerable visual leap compared to previous versions. The character models received a redesign, as did the game environments.

Gameplay and modes also gain new features. Nintendo confirmed the addition of a cooperative mode that allows you to play with friends. A 4v4 multiplayer mode was announced, expanding the possibilities for online competition. Essas additions complement the game core that maintains fidelity to the structure of Star Fox 64.

Trajetória turbulent series

Star Fox Zero illustrates the ups and downs of the franchise well. Lançado in 2016 for Wii U, the game was a collaboration between Nintendo and PlatinumGames. The developer, known as Bayonetta and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, faced challenges integrating the Wii U’s motion controls into gameplay.

The result divided critics. The proposal mixed elements from Star Fox, Star Fox 64 and new concepts, but without clear cohesion. Polygon described the game as full of “failed and confusing experiments”. Motion controls, often criticized on the platform, detracted from the overall experience. Star Fox Zero became a low point in a string of remakes that failed to gain consistent viewership.

Return Contexto

Waiting for a decade without new releases in the series reflects Nintendo’s difficulty in revitalizing the franchise. Fox McCloud’s recent appearance in the film Super Mario Galaxy Movie signaled the company’s renewed interest in the character. The announcement of Star Fox (2026) confirms that the company is looking to revive the series with strength, betting on the new technology of Switch 2 to justify yet another return to the 1997 classic.

Nintendo is confident that the combination of updated graphics, co-op mode and multiplayer version will provide enough reasons for fans and new players to try Star Fox again. The franchise remains tied to the DNA of its most successful game, repeating a proven formula rather than exploring new narrative or mechanical territory.
