Apple has begun testing Intel’s 18A-P manufacturing technology to produce systems-on-chip intended for iPads, Macs, and entry-level and legacy iPhones. The move marks the return of the partnership between the two American giants after six years of separation, when Apple completely migrated to its own Apple Silicon. Segundo industry analysts, the strategy seeks to diversify the supply chain and reduce almost total dependence on Taiwanese manufacturer TSMC.

The Estados Unidos government, which holds a stake in Intel, would have encouraged the resumption of commercial cooperation between American companies. The experimental phase focuses on intermediate performance components that do not require the power of more advanced generations of processors. Essa approach allows Apple to maintain affordable products with optimized production costs while testing the viability of manufacturing on American soil.

Cronograma testing and first deliveries expected

Intel will dedicate the entire year of 2026 to production testing and refinement of the 18A-P technology, with the aim of ensuring that the energy efficiency standards required by Apple are achieved. The first commercial deliveries are scheduled for early 2027, with gradual volume expansion until 2029. Operations will be centralized in factories located in the states of Oregon, Arizona and Ohio.

The initial focus will be on the A18 Pro chip, intended for lower-cost devices and previous versions that remain on the production line. 18A-P lithography is considered a direct upgrade of the conventional 18A process, competing in transistor density with TSMC’s N2 process. The choice of this already consolidated architecture facilitates the comparison of efficiency between chips produced in Taiwan and Estados Unidos.

TSMC Maintains Dominant Position in Supply Chain

Mesmo With the entry of Intel into the Apple manufacturing ecosystem, TSMC will continue to account for approximately 90% of the company’s total demand. The Cupertino giant remains cautious in the transition, anticipating that only a minority share of production will be diverted to American soil in the first years of the contract. The majority of Intel’s production will be aimed at iPhone processors.

  • Cerca 80% of the volume produced by Intel will be focused on chips for cell phones.
  • The 1.4 nanometer 14A process is already under technical evaluation by Apple.
  • Production on American soil meets government pressure for technological sovereignty.
  • Basic iPad Modelos and MacBook Air from previous generations should receive the new chips.

The diversification process is not limited to the 1.8 nanometer node of Intel. Engenheiros of Apple are already analyzing the capabilities of Intel’s future factories for even smaller lithographs, such as the 14A. The intention is to have a viable and geographically distinct alternative for future logistical or geopolitical crises at Ásia, ensuring greater resilience in the global supply chain.

Desempenho technical and impact for legacy products

The Intel 18A-P technology represents the company’s effort to regain leadership in the semiconductor foundry sector. Analistas hardware points out that the performance of this process is on par with the most modern in the global industry. Para to Apple, using this technology in previous generation products allows devices to remain competitive with reduced production costs.

If the 2026 test results are positive, Intel could take on orders of greater technical complexity in the decades to come. Choosing the A18 Pro as the basis for initial testing indicates that the Apple seeks stability and reliability before expanding to more sophisticated processors. Essa’s gradual approach reduces technical risks and allows adjustments to the manufacturing process as needed during the mass production phase.
