President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that the US may need to attack Irã again, but acknowledged that Teerã is seeking an agreement to end the conflict. Trump declared that he was one hour away from ordering an attack before postponing the military operation, signaling an openness to negotiations while maintaining pressure on the Iranian regime.

Prazo established for resumption of hostilities

Trump has defined a short time window for new military operations if no agreement is reached. In statements to the press at Casa Branca, the president mentioned a period of two to three days, citing possible dates such as Friday, Saturday or Sunday, or even at the beginning of next week.

The president stressed that Washington cannot allow Irã to develop nuclear weapons. The suspension of the planned attack came a day after Teerã presented a new peace proposal, which Trump had initially dismissed.

Iranian Proposta and negotiated conditions

Irã’s state media reported that Teerã’s latest peace proposal involves:

  • Encerramento of hostilities on all fronts, including Líbano
  • Saída of US forces from areas close to Irã
  • Reparações for damage caused by Israeli and American attacks
  • Levantamento of international sanctions
  • Liberação of frozen funds
  • Fim of the maritime blockade imposed by the US

Iranian deputy minister Relações Exteriores confirmed these demands via state news agency IRNA. The terms appear similar to the previous offer that Trump rejected as “garbage” the week before.

Postura of Washington in negotiations

US Vice President JD Vance stated during a press conference that Washington and Teerã have made significant progress in negotiations. Vance stated that neither side wishes to resume the military campaign, signaling a willingness to continue discussions. Trump also mentioned on Monday that there would be “a good chance” of reaching a deal that would prevent Irã from obtaining nuclear weapons.

Ebrahim Azizi, head of the Iranian parliament’s national security committee, attributed the suspension of the attack to Trump’s realization that any action against Irã would result in “a decisive military response.” The statement suggests that both parties recognize the severity of the consequences of an escalation.

Paquistão’s Papel in negotiations

Paquistão has been acting as an intermediary between the sides since hosting the only round of peace talks the previous month. A Pakistani source confirmed that Islamabad shared the Iranian proposal with Washington. Segundo the same source, “teams keep changing their rules of the game”, warning that “we don’t have much time” to reach a solution.

Impacto in energy markets

Oil prices retreated following Trump’s statements. A barrel of Brent oil was quoted at US$ 110.26, registering a drop of 1.64% on the day. Geopolitical uncertainty directly affects global markets, especially considering the strategic importance of Estreito and Ormuz, a fundamental route for the international supply of oil and other commodities.

Trump is under pressure to reach a deal that reopens Estreito from Ormuz. The president had already expressed hope that an agreement to end the conflict was close and, simultaneously, threatened heavy attacks on Irã if the country did not reach a solution.

Preocupações with strategic security

The U.S. Estado’s Secretário, Marco Rubio, and the UN’s Secretário-General, António Guterres, discussed American efforts to prevent Irã from laying mines and imposing tolls on Ormuz’s Estreito. Rubio emphasized the “overwhelming support from a broad base of UN members” for these efforts, according to Departamento’s statement from Estado.

Sinais concerns continue, especially following the launch of Iraque drones toward Golfo countries, including Arábia Saudita and Kuwait, apparently by Irã and its allies. Isso comes even after the ceasefire established in early April, which has largely held.

Contexto from ongoing conflict

Joint US-Israel bombings killed thousands of people in Irã before the suspension. Israel also caused hundreds of thousands of people to be displaced in Líbano during a military operation against the Hezbollah militia, supported by Irã. Iranian attacks against Israel and Golfo’s neighboring countries resulted in dozens of deaths.

Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that they started the war to counter Irã’s support for regional militias, dismantle its nuclear program, destroy its missile production capabilities, and create conditions for regime change. However, the war has not yet deprived Irã of its stockpile of nearly weapons-ready enriched uranium, nor of its ability to threaten neighboring countries with missiles, drones, and allied militias.

The clerical leadership of República Islâmica, which faced popular uprising at the beginning of the year, resisted the superpower’s attack without showing any sign of internal organized opposition. Pouco Prior to his statements on Tuesday, the Trump administration imposed sanctions on an Iranian exchange and what it claimed were shell companies overseeing transactions on behalf of Iranian banks.
