A rose named in honor of Sir David Beckham debuted in this edition of Chelsea Flower Show, at Inglaterra. The creation of David Austin Roses arose from a special request from the former player’s daughter, Harper, to mark her father’s 50th birthday last year.

The choice for a shrub rose tree came from a concrete desire. Harper imagined something that could “grow with the family” in the coming years, according to Shropshire’s company.

Design and characteristics of the named flower

Rosa Sir David Beckham has white flowers with pink, yellow and gold stamens distributed in clusters. The fragrance mixes fresh notes with subtle touches of banana, honey, nougat, clove and myrrh — a unique aroma among the brand’s creations.

The shrub rose was part of the Jardim Cotswold exhibition of David Austin this year, which won the gold award in the Chelsea competition. The recognition reflects decades of expertise in English rose hybridization.

Notable Encontros and collaborations

Há One year, Sir David met up with Rei Charles wearing another of David Austin’s roses in his buttonhole — Rei’s Rosa. Nesta edition of the show, the duo met again in a collaborative exhibition that featured the renowned gardener Alan Titchmarsh.

The space brought together three homonymous roses:

  • Rosa from Rei
  • Rosa Sir David Beckham
  • Rosa Alan Titchmarsh

The exhibition was part of Fundação King’s Jardim Curioso, filled with playful elements such as gnomes, works of art, hanging plants, balls of yarn, jars of honey and even vodka, a design that sought to encourage visitors to become curious about gardening.

Propósito philanthropic and legacy

Sir David commented on the meaning of this tribute. “Gardening brings people from different generations together and brings a lot of joy. Fazer being part of something that celebrates that and the heritage of the English rose is very meaningful to me,” said the former Manchester United and England player.

David Austin Roses has committed to a charitable initiative. Para for every Sir David Beckham rose sold, the company will donate £2.50 to King’s Foundation, an institution for which Sir David is an ambassador. The measure transforms each purchase into a contribution to projects related to the arts, gardening and sustainability.
