Mike Santana successfully defended his TNA world championship against Steve Maclin on Thursday night’s Impact broadcast in a highly anticipated grudge match. Maclin made his dramatic return to the company after a controversial period that saw him briefly removed from the roster following an altercation with announcer Tom Hannifan. The match represented a critical moment for both competitors, with Santana looking to solidify his position as champion while Maclin sought redemption and the title belt.
Director of Operations Daria Rae played a pivotal role in Maclin’s return, having worked to reinstate him after his termination. Before the match began, Rae delivered a pointed message to Maclin about the company’s treatment of him and his opportunity to prove his worth against the current champion.
Rae’s strategic motivation sets the tone for title clash
In a pre-match segment, Daria Rae addressed Steve Maclin directly, reminding him of the circumstances surrounding his firing. She emphasized how the company turned against him overnight after the incident with Tom Hannifan, but positioned herself as the one person who saw his value rather than liability. Rae told Maclin that everyone else feared him because they understood what he was capable of when focused. She framed the match as an opportunity to “rip the heart right out of this company” by defeating Santana and placing the championship on someone she deemed worthy of carrying it.
Eric Young, the number one contender for the world title, also confronted Maclin before the bell rang. Young warned that whoever emerged victorious would have to face him at his most dangerous. Maclin responded by vowing to hospitalize Santana and attempted to confront the champion before their scheduled match time.
Physical battle sees both competitors exchange control throughout
The match immediately turned into an intense physical contest from the opening bell. Both wrestlers traded momentum throughout the bout, with neither able to maintain extended control. Santana demonstrated his aerial ability by climbing to the top rope and connecting with a splash to the outside after Maclin attempted to avoid his attack. The champion showed his willingness to take risks to retain his title.
Maclin utilized the ringside area to his advantage, throwing Santana into the ring post and setting up a table on the outside. When Santana attempted a clothesline from the ring steps, he appeared to injure his left leg. Maclin immediately targeted the weakened limb, working strategically to limit the champion’s mobility and offensive capabilities.
High-impact moves fail to determine winner as match intensifies
As the match entered its final minutes, both competitors elevated their offense to championship-level intensity. Santana connected with a Rolling Buck 50, but Maclin kicked out before the three-count. A Blue Thunder Bomb also failed to keep Maclin down, demonstrating his resilience and determination to capture the title.
- Maclin crashed through the table he set up earlier after Santana hit an enziguri on the top rope
- Santana rolled Maclin back into the ring and executed a frog splash for a near fall
- Maclin appeared to collapse before Santana could hit his finishing move Spin the Block
- The champion checked on his opponent but fell into a trap as Maclin delivered a superkick
- Santana gathered enough energy to finally connect with Spin the Block for the victory
After securing the pinfall victory, Santana declared “This is my house” as the broadcast concluded, cementing his position as TNA world champion and sending a message to all future challengers including Eric Young.
Alexander defends X Division title status as Aichner emerges as challenger
Earlier in the broadcast, The System opened the show celebrating Cedric Alexander’s X Division Championship victory over Leon Slater. Alexander addressed the audience, emphasizing that Slater was one day away from accomplishing his dream and becoming a record maker. Instead, Alexander proclaimed himself the record taker and the signature champion of TNA. He expressed frustration that Fabian Aichner interrupted his championship moment the previous week.
When Alexander called him out, Aichner appeared and explained his intentions clearly. He stated he came to TNA for respect, redemption and recognition. Aichner challenged The System’s claim to being the best in the company, declaring that bigger obstacles make him better. He announced he wasn’t just a gimmick but a future TNA champion, and expressed interest in Alexander’s X Division title. Aichner made it clear he wasn’t waiting in line but taking his spot immediately.
The System attempted to attack Aichner in the aisle, but he successfully fought off Bear Bronson, Brian Meyers and Eddie Edwards. When Alexander tried his Lumbar Check finisher, Aichner reversed it into a chokehold, leaving him standing tall as The System retreated with their champion. The segment concluded with the announcement that Aichner will face Edwards next week on Impact.
Marella secures match against Stacks after Grace attacks Hartwell
During a match between Indi Hartwell and Elayna Black, Stacks and his fiancée Arianna Grace watched from ringside. Grace, the former TNA Knockouts world champion who has feuded extensively with Hartwell, took action when Stacks distracted the referee. She pushed Hartwell off the top rope and began attacking her, blaming her father Santino Marella for her title loss. Grace claimed current champion Lei Ying Lee didn’t deserve her opportunity at the championship.
Marella, TNA’s director of authority, responded by coming to the ring and calling Grace classless. He stated that the only unfinished business was her attitude and that she needed to be grounded. Marella turned his attention to Stacks, saying he made him sick and was filling Grace’s head with garbage. When Marella prepared to use his cobra strike on Stacks, Daria Rae intervened and reminded him that any match request needed board approval.
Rae later announced that the board approved the match for next week’s broadcast. Santino Marella will face Stacks in a one-on-one confrontation, adding another personal rivalry to the ongoing storylines developing throughout the TNA roster.
