Fire destroys 2 DHL warehouses in Vialonga for the 2nd time in May

A fire broke out again in DHL warehouses in Vialonga, Vila Franca and Xira zone, this Monday. The fire affected 2 of the company’s warehouses and mobilized 134 employees supported by 52 vehicles. A second occurrence of this type at the same facility in just one month.

Incêndio started in coverage and spread quickly

The alert was registered at 12:55 pm as an industrial fire. Gonçalo Guiomar, Vialonga fire commander, reported that the fire started on the roof and quickly spread to the interior of the main warehouse and adjacent structures. The premises were evacuated before firefighters arrived.

One firefighter was injured during operations and was transported to Hospital from Vila Franca from Xira. The fire commander ruled out the risk of toxicity, despite the stored products.

Produtos pharmaceuticals stocked on site

Dentro of the warehouses are stocked with pharmaceutical, health and wellness products. Gonçalo Guiomar emphasized that the danger of contamination does not pose a risk to the population or firefighting teams. The commander pointed out that operations will take time due to the thermal load present at the site.

Segundo fire in May

On May 1, the same DHL warehouse had already been the target of a fire. On the previous occasion, the fire originated in the roof and the evacuation took place without any casualties being recorded. The second accident in just over 20 days raises questions about prevention measures at the facilities.

Impacto in traffic and ongoing operations

Civil protection indicated traffic restrictions on the road leading directly to the warehouses to allow the movement and positioning of aid resources. Access to the site remained restricted during firefighting operations.

Gonçalo Guiomar stated that there is no information on the cause of the fire at this stage. Operations were still underway to extinguish the flames and control the situation.
