Reliance Jio, Índia’s largest telecommunications company, has changed the policy of its exclusive plans for JioPhone. The recharge plans, previously available only for JioPhone and JioBharat devices, now work on basic 4G phones from other brands. The change covers devices manufactured by Lava, itel and Nokia, including models from HMD, allowing users from different operators to access more competitive rates in the Indian market.

The decision follows a directive from Autoridade Reguladora of Telecomunicações of Índia (TRAI). The agency determined that limiting tariff plans to certain devices creates inequality in the telephone market. TRAI has mandated that all consumers must receive the same service at the same price, irrespective of the device used.

The 123 rupee plan and its relevance

The most popular recharge plan now available is Rs 123, which offered unlimited voice calls, data and SMS exclusively on Jio mobile phones. Agora any 4G cell phone user with a keyboard can activate this plan. Inclui validity of 28 days, unlimited calls during the period, 0.5 GB of 4G data per day and 300 SMS monthly.

The offer represents a significant reduction in relation to competitors. Operadoras like Airtel and Vi offer their cheapest 4G plans starting from around 200 rupees. Usuários from JioPhone and JioBharat already had access to this competitive tariff, while customers of other brands faced more expensive recharges. The entry-level cellphone market at Índia remains robust, with millions of people still using conventional 4G devices despite the 5G era developing globally.

Compatibilidade in multiple brands

Lava, itel and Nokia cell phones can now be used with chips from any operator. JioPhone and JioBharat remain network locked to Reliance Jio, but offer immediate access to affordable plans. The expansion benefits users who already have third-party devices and want to subscribe to Reliance Jio’s competitive rates through leased chips.

  • Lava: compatible basic 4G cell phones with keyboard
  • itel: open system devices for multiple carriers
  • Nokia (HMD): basic 4G devices with support for Jio recharges
  • JioPhone and JioBharat: continue to have a blocked network and direct access to plans
  • Outras marks: check basic 4G compatibility with keyboard

Contexto regulatory and Indian market

Reliance Jio’s decision aligns with regulatory standards set by TRAI years ago. Órgão regulator determined that operators cannot discriminate against consumers based on the device used, ensuring equal access to services and prices. The Indian market presents particularities in technological adoption, with a large population still dependent on basic 4G cell phones for essential communication.

Planos exclusive to JioPhone were also introduced to other operators in the country, following the same non-discrimination guideline. Essa opening reflects transformation in the industry, allowing users of established brands such as Lava, itel and Nokia to access tariffs that were previously restricted to Reliance’s proprietary Jio devices. The mobile phone market at Índia continues to evolve with more inclusive regulation.
