Car sales in India grow 32.8% in May 2026

The Indian passenger vehicle market recorded positive performance in May 2026. The Maruti Dzire consolidated its first position among the best-selling models with 24,546 units sold. The result represented growth of 35.73% compared to the same month in 2025.

The increase reflects continued demand for efficient compact sedans. Maruti Suzuki maintained a wide lead in the overall ranking. Outros models from the brand also occupied prominent positions.

Dzire maintains leadership with significant growth

Maruti Dzire outperformed all competitors in the month. Foram 24,546 units sold. Esse volume corresponds to almost 13% of the total of the top ten sales.

The compact sedan gained traction with fuel-saving appeal and affordable options. The corporate fleet also contributed to performance. In the previous year, the model had registered 18,084 units in the same period.

Second place went to Maruti Fronx. The crossover registered 20,686 units, an increase of 52.28%. Logo followed behind Maruti Ertiga, with 20,350 units and an increase of 26.08%.

Tata Motors advances with Punch and Nexon

The Tata Punch, including electric versions, reached 20,208 units. The result placed the model in fourth position in the overall ranking. The Tata Nexon, with combustion and electric variants, totaled 19,100 units.

Ambos Tata’s utilities grew more than 45% compared to May 2025. The performance reinforces the brand’s presence in the affordable SUV segment.

The list continues with Maruti Baleno at 18,396 units. The model advanced 58.34%. The Wagon R sold 18,076 units. Swift closed Maruti’s share at the top with 17,519 units.

SUVs drive market expansion

The SUV segment recorded even more robust growth. The 15 biggest sales totaled 194,225 units. The increase reached 40.34% compared to the previous year.

Maruti Fronx led the specific SUV ranking with the same 20,686 units. Tata Punch came second with 20,208. Nexon completed the podium with 19,100 units. Juntos, Punch and Nexon surpassed 39 thousand vehicles.

The Mahindra Scorpio, with combined versions, sold 15,774 units. The Hyundai Creta, including the electric version, registered 15,253 units and ranked fifth among SUVs.

Maruti Brezza was the exception when it registered a drop. Foram 13,245 units, down 14.91%. Analistas link the movement to the expectation of the launch of the new generation.

Outros highlights of the month

Hyundai Venue grew 55.77% and reached 11,714 units. Kia Seltos maintained a pace above 10 thousand with 10,597 units, an increase of 74.24%. Maruti Grand Vitara jumped 80.22% to 9,366 units.

Mahindra Thar and Roxx together sold 10,787 units. Bolero registered 8,933 units, with volume practically stable. Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder advanced 14.41% to 8,664 units.

The dataset confirms Indian consumers’ growing preference for SUVs. Mesmo with five more models on the list of the 15 largest SUVs, the volume surpassed that of the ten largest sales of passenger cars.

Maruti Suzuki dominates with six models in the top 10

The Japanese manufacturer, in local partnership, placed six vehicles among the ten best-selling vehicles. The domain spans from compact sedans to crossovers and MPVs.

The diversified portfolio and competitive pricing strategy supports the leadership. Tata Motors, in turn, focused on compact sports utility vehicles. Hyundai, Mahindra and Kia completed a relevant presence in the ranking.

The market as a whole showed consistent recovery. Fatores as affordable hybrid and electric options, along with easy financing, helped boost the numbers.

Perspectiva for the next few months

May’s numbers reinforce the trend observed throughout 2026. SUVs continue to be the main driver of growth. Modelos with energy efficiency technologies gain ground.

Fabricantes prepare updates and new releases to keep pace. The focus remains on meeting the demand for versatility, safety and low consumption.
