Chinese BYD introduced its new plug-in hybrid technology in the Indian market. The company, which until now focused its efforts on 100% electric vehicles, introduced the DM-i Super Plug-in Hybrid EV system. The first model to use this technology will be the BYD Seal U.
The Seal U will be the brand’s first car with plug-in hybrid technology available in India. To date, BYD has only launched pure electric models in the country. According to information, the commercial launch should take place at the end of 2026.
Battery and motor together
DM-i Super Plug-in Hybrid EV technology combines battery and electric motor with a combustion engine. The package includes a 1.5-liter direct injection turbo gasoline engine, two electric motors and an 18.3 kWh battery.
BYD highlights that the system offers one of the best thermal efficiencies in the world. The declared consumption is 4.8 liters of gasoline per 100 km. Adding a full tank to a full battery charge, the total autonomy can reach 1200 km.

How does the technology work?
When the battery is fully charged, the car runs in pure electric mode for up to 70 km. In normal use, the gasoline engine acts as a generator to keep the electrical system running. In high demand situations, the heat engine transmits power directly to the wheels.
The entire process occurs automatically, with the vehicle switching between EV, series hybrid and parallel hybrid modes without driver intervention. The model also has a V2L function, which allows you to use the battery to power external electrical equipment.
