BYD announced the arrival of Super DM-i Plug-in Hybrid technology to the Indian market. The Chinese automaker, known for its 100% electric vehicles, is preparing to expand into the plug-in hybrid segment with a system that prioritizes electric mode and offers a combined range of more than 1,000 km.

The announcement was made through BYD India’s official social media channels. The company highlighted that the new technology will change the concept of driving by delivering silent and smooth drivability similar to that of a pure electric car, backed by a gasoline engine for long journeys.

What is Super DM-i technology

The Super DM-i is BYD’s next generation of plug-in hybrids. Unlike traditional hybrids, where the combustion engine predominates, this system mainly uses the electric motor for most daily driving. The gasoline engine acts as a power generator or in high demand situations.

The technology relies on BYD’s Blade battery, considered one of the safest on the market. Models like the Sealion 6 DM-i offer 18.3 kWh or 26.6 kWh battery options, with a pure electric range that can reach around 90-140 km depending on configuration.

Sealion 6 DM-i testing in India

The Sealion 6 DM-i SUV has already been spotted testing on Indian roads. The model has generous dimensions, measuring around 4.78 meters in length, and promises ample internal space in addition to a 425-liter trunk.

There are versions with front and all-wheel drive. In the most powerful configuration (AWD), the system delivers up to around 339 hp combined. The total combined autonomy reaches 1,092 km with a full tank and charged battery, according to global data from the manufacturer.

Why BYD bets on hybrids in India

BYD’s entry into the PHEV segment comes at a time when the Indian market still faces charging infrastructure challenges for pure electric vehicles. DM-i technology allows you to run most of the time in electric mode, with low fuel consumption, and eliminate range anxiety on long journeys.

Experts point out that this strategy can attract consumers who want the benefits of an electric vehicle without relying exclusively on charging points. BYD already sells thousands of EVs in India and is now expanding its portfolio to grow in a market that values versatile options.

The possible launch of the brand’s first plug-in hybrid in the country is set to debut soon, with the Sealion 6 or the Atto 2 DM-i as the main candidates.
