BYD has unveiled the Dolphin G DM-i, a plug-in hybrid hatchback developed especially for the European market. The model arrives with the promise of up to 1000 kilometers of combined autonomy, combining an electric and gasoline engine to reduce the anxiety of those who fear running out of charge.

The Chinese automaker is betting on DM-i Super Hybrid technology to deliver electric performance most of the time, with the combustion engine acting mainly as a range extender. The vehicle was presented with a focus on users who want to drive like an electric vehicle, but without relying exclusively on charging infrastructure.

The Dolphin G DM-i measures 4160 millimeters in length and will compete for space in the B segment with models such as the Volkswagen Polo, Renault Clio and Toyota Yaris. While competitors offer mild hybrid or full hybrid systems, BYD’s new proposal features a more robust plug-in hybrid configuration.

The company has not yet released all the complete technical details of the model. Reports indicate that it must share components with the Atto 2 DM-i, including a 1.5 gasoline engine associated with a front electric thruster and Blade battery. The known variants of the platform deliver power of around 164 hp and torque of 212 Nm.

BYD plans to start deliveries of the Dolphin G DM-i in Europe at the end of 2026. For now, there is no official price announcement. The strategy targets buyers who want the benefits of an electric car on a daily basis, but need flexibility for long journeys without worrying about recharging.

The launch reinforces the expansion of the brand’s hybrid line outside of China. The automaker has already signaled interest in bringing similar technologies to other markets, including Brazil, where the DM-i has been discussed as a possible solution to expand the range of vehicles.
