Nintendo confirmed this Tuesday (9) during Nintendo Direct the remake ofThe Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, one of the most influential games in the history of video games. The title will be exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2 and is scheduled for release in 2026.

The reveal trailer provided a brief glimpse of Link awakening, while maintaining the mystery surrounding the complete visual changes. The presentation showed little of the gameplay or new visuals, which suggests that the company may hold a Nintendo Direct dedicated to the game soon to show more details.

A classic that revolutionized 3D games

Originally released in 1998 for the Nintendo 64,Ocarina of Timeit was the first 3D Zelda and set standards for open-world adventure games that are still used today. The game sold more than 7 million copies, received top marks in several publications and is often cited as one of the best video games of all time.

In 2011, Nintendo released a version for the Nintendo 3DS with rebuilt graphics, improved controls (including gyroscopic aiming), Master Quest, and quality of life improvements such as simpler item management. The Switch 2 remake should go further, harnessing the power of the new console for a more ambitious rebuild.

Why the remake matters now

The announcement comes at a strategic time: the Switch 2 should hit the market in 2026, and an iconic title like this serves as a strong attraction for the new hardware. Furthermore, the year marks the 40th anniversary of the Zelda franchise, which reinforces the weight of the production. Previous rumors from insiders like NateTheHate already pointed to a launch in late 2026, in line with the holiday window.

Unlike the 3DS version, which was a portable adaptation with occasional improvements, the new project is described as a complete remake, rebuilt for modern hardware. This could include updated visuals, smoother performance, and possibly gameplay tweaks to appeal to veterans and new players alike.

What’s next

There are still no details on price, exact date or whether there will be special editions (such as themed consoles, something that has also circulated in rumors). Nintendo tends to reveal more information little by little, especially for big remakes.

For fans, the official confirmation ends months of speculation and reignites enthusiasm for reliving Link’s journey between Hyrule and the Sacred World with current technology.
