A systemic failure left the ABEMA streaming platform unavailable to most users for more than four hours this Wednesday (10).

The outage began around 6:16 pm and was only fully resolved at 10:33 pm local Japanese time. During the period, most channels and content were inaccessible, with the exception of the news channel, which continued to operate on a limited basis.

The company communicated the problem on its official social networks and in the application, asking users for patience. “We are facing a problem in which the ‘ABEMA’ channel is not being displayed correctly. We are working to restore the service”, informed ABEMA. The company also issued an apology for the inconvenience.

On social media, user reports quickly multiplied. Many expressed frustration at not being able to watch live programs, especially entertainment, anime and sports content that attracts large audiences on the platform.

ABEMA clarified that programs that could not be broadcast in real time will be made available later on-demand. The company should soon release updates on the new schedule of reruns and re-airings.

So far, no details have been released about the exact cause of the failure. Technology experts point out that streaming services like ABEMA, which operates with multiple live channels and a large volume of traffic, are susceptible to infrastructure problems at peak times.

The platform, which has established itself as one of the main online TV options in Japan, turns 10 years old in 2026 and has invested in exclusive broadcasts and original content to compete with global giants.
