The BBC has decided to cancel the Doctor Who Christmas special scheduled for 2026. At the same time, the broadcaster announced that showrunner Russell T Davies will leave production of the series. The corporation now plans to open the future of the attraction to proposals from other production companies.

The decision was communicated this Wednesday (10). The Christmas special had been promised last year as a way to ensure the program’s continuity after the end of the partnership with Disney+.

Russell T Davies confirms dismissal

On Instagram, Russell T Davies published a farewell message, but with an optimistic tone. “Goodbye from me but hello to a big new future for the show”, wrote the screenwriter, who returned to the series in 2022.

He explained that the special was created just as “assurance” in a time of uncertainty. “Now that we know what’s going to happen, there’s no need for it,” he added. Davies also clarified that there was no script ready, nor actor chosen for the next Doctor.

End of the Ncuti Gatwa era and the partnership with Disney

The last complete season, with Ncuti Gatwa in the lead role, was shown in May 2025. The finale brought the Doctor’s regeneration and the surprise return of Billie Piper, who played Rose Tyler in the first seasons of the revived series. At the time, the BBC left Piper’s exact role in the future open.

Since 2023, the production was a co-production with Bad Wolf, from Cardiff, and had international distribution from Disney+. The partnership with streaming ended after 26 episodes, in 2025.

BBC prioritizes long-term future

In an official statement, the BBC said that the decision to cancel the special was taken “after careful consideration” together with Davies and Bad Wolf. “We know it will be disappointing for fans,” acknowledged the broadcaster.

However, the choice is to invest in the “long term” so that the return of the TARDIS is “in all its glory”. The corporation also confirmed that it will put Doctor Who through a competitive bidding process later this year, as required by the BBC Charter and Agreement.

History and what changes for the series

Doctor Who debuted in 1963 and was off the air between 1989 and 2005, when Davies revived it with Christopher Eccleston. Since then, David Tennant, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, Jodie Whittaker and Ncuti Gatwa have played the lead role.

An animated series for CBeebies is still in production. For fans, the announcement means a longer break until new episodes, but the BBC reinforces its commitment to the program as an important part of its programming. Davies ended his message by saying he is “as excited as anyone” to see what comes next.
