Benfica made official this Tuesday the hiring of Marco Silva as the team’s new head coach. The 48-year-old Portuguese coach signed a contract valid until the end of the 2027/2028 season, with the option to extend it for another season.
The change marks the beginning of the post-José Mourinho era at the Luz club. A few minutes before, Benfica announced the departure of the 63-year-old coach to Real Madrid, who will pay his release clause of 15 million euros.
Marco Silva arrives after five successful seasons at Premier League side Fulham. At the English club, he won the Championship title and consolidated the team in the first division, achieving the best performance in points and victories in the Cottagers’ recent history.
The coach already has experience in Portuguese football. He managed Estoril and Sporting, where he won the Portuguese Cup in the 2014/2015 season. Silva also had spells at Olympiakos, Hull City, Watford and Everton before settling at Fulham.
Marco Silva’s arrival represents a bet on a coach with a profile for building stable and competitive teams. Unlike Mourinho’s more explosive style, the new commander is known for organized football, with an emphasis on defensive solidity and quick transitions.
At Benfica, the immediate challenge will be to prepare the team for next season’s competitions, including the National Championship and the initial stages of European competitions. The board, led by Rui Costa, is now looking for reinforcements that fit the new coach’s vision of the game.
