Disney has released the final trailer for the live-action remake ofMoana, with Dwayne Johnson reprising the role of demigod Maui alongside newcomer Catherine Lagaʻaia. The video highlights singing and dancing sequences, as well as confrontations with creatures such as the giant crab Tamatoa. The film hits theaters on July 10, 2026.
The trailer shows Moana and Maui on an oceanic journey beyond the reef of Motunui Island, with direct references to the 2016 animated classic. There is an expanded sequence of the song “You’re Welcome”, performed by Johnson, and scenes of the tribe’s dance, reinforcing the musical tone of the story.
Cast mixes veterans and new faces
Catherine Lagaʻaia, who makes her debut in a major film role, plays the protagonist. Johnson returns to the character he voiced in the animation and inMoana 2(2024). Jemaine Clement returns as the voice of Tamatoa, the glitter-obsessed crab. The cast also features John Tui as Chief Tui (Moana’s father), Frankie Adams as Sina (mother) and Rena Owen as Grandma Tala.
Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the animated films, serves as executive producer, but chose not to reprise the lead role to make room for a new actress of Polynesian descent. Lin-Manuel Miranda is also part of the production.
Production with a focus on cultural authenticity
Directed by Thomas Kail, Tony winner forHamilton, the film was shot between Atlanta and Hawaii. Filming took place between July and November 2024, with an emphasis on authentic Polynesian representation, from locations to costumes and dancing. Johnson had already commented on the transformation process for the character’s muscular and tattooed look.
What Past Success Promises
The original 2016 animation grossed more than US$687 million worldwide and became a cultural phenomenon.Moana 2, released in 2024, was also a huge box office success. The live-action film arrives exactly in the year of the franchise’s 10th anniversary, with the potential to repeat the performance in a realistic format that mixes visual effects and live performances.
The trailer also introduces companions Pua (pig) and Heihei (chicken), the Kakamora (coconut-shaped monsters) and the lava monster Te Kā, recreated with new visual textures. Tickets are now on sale, with IMAX and 4DX screenings confirmed.
