Newcastle United announced this Wednesday the signing of 20-year-old French goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Stade de Reims. The young talent arrives at St. James’ Park as the first acquisition of the summer transfer window.
Jaouen, born on December 29, 2005, stood out in the 2025/2026 Ligue 2 season, where he played 34 matches for Reims, recording 15 clean sheets. The 1.97m tall archer has already made more than 60 appearances for the French club, as well as loan spells at teams such as Rodez and Dunkerque.
The deal involves values of around €28.5 million, including bonuses, which represents a significant investment in a player still at the beginning of his career. Sources indicate that the signed contract lasts four years, with the possibility of extension. The goalkeeper overcame competition from clubs like Chelsea and Real Madrid.
Investment in the future in goal
Jaouen’s arrival reinforces Newcastle’s long-term planning, which seeks to balance experience and youth in the squad led by Eddie Howe. The Frenchman initially arrives as an option for Nick Pope, but is seen as a potential successor, especially given concerns about injuries to the starter.
The player’s profile pleases the coaching staff: good with his feet, quick reflexes and imposing presence in the area. Jaouen also has experience with France’s youth teams, which fuels expectations of progress in English football.
Newcastle remains active in the market, with the transfer window open. Jaouen’s official status marks the beginning of a cycle of reinforcements, in search of greater consistency in the Premier League and European competitions.
