Lucid Motors has begun rolling out an over-the-air (OTA) software update for the Gravity SUV that adds hands-free driving capability on select highways.

The Hands-Free Drive Assist feature, available for vehicles equipped with the DreamDrive Pro 2 package, takes control of steering, acceleration and braking while the driver supervises. The system also includes automatic lane changing, activated by turn signal or autonomously when it detects slower traffic.

The news comes about a year after the same feature was released for the Lucid Air sedan. With this, the Gravity, which hit the market in 2025 as one of the brand’s main launches, gains an important boost in driver assistance.

Lucid advances into autonomous driving with bigger plans

The update is part of a broader move by Lucid to strengthen its assisted driving capabilities. The company plans to launch Gravity-based robotaxis in partnership with Uber later this year, using technology from Nuro. There is also a two-seat autonomous pod concept and the promise of Level 4 capability in the future midsize vehicle, with support from Nvidia.

These steps show that Lucid doesn’t want to just focus on premium hardware. Software becomes increasingly central to competing with rivals such as Tesla, General Motors and Ford, which already offer consolidated hands-free systems.

Other highlights of the UX 3.6 update

In addition to hands-free driving, the update brings high-intensity adaptive headlights (Adaptive Driving Beam), which adjust the beam to avoid dazzling oncoming drivers without losing lighting.

Built-in navigation now displays richer Google Maps information, including reviews, photos, and business details. For those using the car on long journeys, there is a new advanced battery pre-conditioning screen, with temperature visualization in relation to the ideal charging range and peak power prediction at DC stations.

These improvements come after initial reports of some software issues in the Gravity, such as an inconsistent digital key and steering wheel buttons that required multiple presses. Lucid claims to have resolved most of these issues with previous OTAs.

What does this mean for owners and the market

The update is initially being released for units in North America. Gravity owners with compatible hardware should receive notification soon.

In the context of the electric luxury market, this type of continuous evolution via software helps justify the model’s premium positioning, which starts at around US$80,000 and offers up to 450 miles of estimated range. Frequent updates keep the vehicle more attractive over time, an important differentiator against traditional competitors.
