The universe of the original Amazon Prime Video series gains a new interactive expansion with the arrival of the franchise’s virtual reality game on PlayStation VR2. The adaptation for Sony’s glasses incorporates native hardware technologies, including eye tracking, improved haptic feedback, and direct processing support for the recently released PlayStation 5 Pro.
Developed by Brazilian studio ARVORE in collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment, the title puts the player in the shoes of an ordinary civilian who loses everything after an incident at the Voughtland theme park. The protagonist ends up injected with Compound V, the chemical substance that grants superpowers in the franchise’s universe, and joins the group of vigilantes to face the Vought corporation and the antagonist Homelander.
The narrative preserves the visual identity and satirical tone of television production, mixing graphic violence, acid humor and criticism of celebrity culture. The new script featured direct participation from the writers of the main series and features the cast’s original voices, including:
- Laz Alonso (as the character Leitinho);
- Jessie T. Usher (as the speedster Trem-Bala);
- Colby Minifie (as executive Ashley Barrett);
- P.J. Byrne (playing director Adam Bourke).
The presence of the actors guarantees the continuity of the canon established on television and deepens the immersion in the universe of the Vought corporation.
PS VR2 version introduces new mechanics and graphical leap
Unlike the edition made available for the Meta Quest glasses in March, the version for the Sony ecosystem uses the equipment’s internal sensors to modify the gameplay. Eye tracking allows players to shoot laser beams through their eyes just by directing their gaze at targets, turning the function into a central combat mechanic. The system also applies foveated rendering, a technique that concentrates graphic processing power exactly at the point where the user is looking, increasing the sharpness of the image.
Technical improvements include detailed textures, dynamic lighting with real-time shadows and a general increase in scene resolution. On standard PlayStation 5 consoles, the game operates at a 90Hz refresh rate, while PlayStation 5 Pro model owners can run the experience at 120Hz, which reduces motion blur and minimizes motion sickness common in virtual reality environments.
Brazilian studio leads the company’s biggest budget production
Based in the city of São Paulo, developer ARVORE has a consolidated history in the global virtual reality market. The company won an Emmy award in 2020 for the interactive experience “The Line” and signed the retro franchise “Pixel Ripped”, with titles set in 1989, 1995 and 1978. The project based on the Amazon series represents the largest production scale ever achieved by the studio, mobilizing a team of approximately 50 professionals during peak development.
The launch comes at a time when Sony’s virtual reality platform seeks to strengthen its catalog with important intellectual properties. The reception of the original version for Quest divided opinions, with praise for the fidelity to the source material, but reservations regarding the technical limitations of the portable hardware. The desktop console adaptation, driven by the Pro model’s hardware, was designed to deliver the definitive edition of the work, correcting performance bottlenecks.
The indicative rating restricts access to those over 17 due to the presence of extreme violence, mutilations, sexual themes, nudity, drug use and inappropriate language. The main campaign offers a linear progression that requires around 10 hours to complete.
The title is now available for purchase on the PlayStation Store digital store, requiring the mandatory use of Sony virtual reality glasses to work.
