The Calzada de Tlalpan, which serves as the main travel route to the Azteca stadium, recorded the flow of a public event just a few hours before the opening clash between Mexico and South Africa, valid for the first round of the World Cup. The mobilization moves to the sports square with the aim of demanding government commitment in locating missing relatives.

According to reports from media outlets in the region, the nation is dealing with a chronic crisis of missing citizens. The movement, called “Let’s Light Up the Search”, brings together relatives of victims and civil groups from at least 10 Mexican federative divisions. The central purpose is to expose the scenario globally and challenge the slowness in investigative procedures and the identification of localized remains.

The act takes place without any records of violence and the organizers discarded the intention of making the show unfeasible, focusing only on giving visibility to their demands. Despite this, the region’s security forces established containment barriers to prevent the contingent from approaching the sports arena, in order to protect the traffic of the public who purchased tickets for the opening ceremony of the international competition.

The Mexican sports venue will host a total of five clashes throughout this World Cup: three commitments valid for the group stage, which includes two duels for the Mexican national team, including this opening game against the South Africans; a clash referring to the round of 32 stage and a last match corresponding to the round of 16. With the end of the current calendar, the sports complex will have a history of 24 duels played in World Cups.

The Mexican national team begins its journey in a World Cup hosted in its own territory for the third opportunity in history, facing South Africa this Thursday, in the afternoon, with the support of its main sporting cauldron: the Azteca stadium.
