The BYD Dolphin G DM-i, one of the most anticipated vehicles from the Chinese manufacturer, had its prices and specifications revealed during its launch in Europe. This new plug-in hybrid hatch offers a crucial glimpse into Brazil, as it is in the production plans of BYD’s future factory in Camaçari, Bahia, from 2027. Its debut in Europe also clarifies the automaker’s strategy for its next hybrids, including the mechanical set that already equips the recently launched Atto 2 DM-i Flex.
Initial values in Europe and the impact on Brazil
In Spain, the model arrived on the market with a price range that varies between 25,200 and 30,700 euros. In direct conversion, these values are between approximately R$150 thousand and R$183 thousand, serving as an initial reference. However, it is essential to consider that local pricing in Brazil can differ significantly due to taxes and production costs. More relevant than the converted values, the European launch confirms the essential technical details of a car that will be a key part in the expansion of BYD’s hybrid line outside of China.
Dimensions and versatility: the interior of the Dolphin G DM-i
Positioned in the compact hatchback segment, the Dolphin G DM-i measures 4.16 meters in length. Despite its ideal size for the urban environment, it surprises with its 2.61 meter wheelbase, ensuring good internal space for occupants. The trunk, with a capacity of 425 liters, exceeds the volume offered by many compact SUVs available on the national market, and can be expanded to 1,225 liters with the rear seats folded down, demonstrating great versatility.
Advanced hybrid technology and sharing with the Atto 2 DM-i Flex
The arrival of the Dolphin G in Europe also sheds light on the functioning of the recently launched Atto 2 DM-i Flex in Brazil. Both models use BYD’s Super Hybrid DM-i technology, sharing the basic propulsion architecture. This system combines a 1.5 naturally aspirated gasoline engine with a primary electric motor, responsible for most of the vehicle’s traction. The priority is electric driving, with the combustion engine acting mainly to extend autonomy and optimize energy efficiency. In practice, the driving experience is more similar to that of an electric vehicle than that of a conventional hybrid, especially on urban routes, with the main difference in relation to the Brazilian model being the absence of the flex system in the European version.
Impressive autonomy and the difference of fast recharging
BYD’s new plug-in hybrid features excellent electric and combined range numbers.
- The entry-level Active version has a 7.42 kWh battery, offering up to 40 kilometers of electric range through the WLTP cycle.
- The Boost, Comfort and Sport configurations are equipped with an 18.3 kWh battery, increasing the range to up to 105 kilometers in all-electric mode.
These data are very close to those observed in the Atto 2 DM-i, which records 45 km and 110 km, respectively, although using different measurement standards (WLTP vs. Inmetro). In all versions, the combined autonomy exceeds 1,000 kilometers, with the larger battery versions reaching 1,040 kilometers between refueling and recharging. A strong point is the direct current fast charging capacity of up to 39 kW in higher versions, allowing the battery to go from 10% to 80% in approximately 26 minutes.
Design and features created for Western consumers
The Dolphin G is considered one of BYD’s first projects developed with a primary focus on Western markets, such as Europe, and not just as an adaptation of a Chinese vehicle. This approach explains features such as the emphasis on energy efficiency, the generous trunk capacity and the comprehensive driving assistance package. Its dimensions are compatible with the European B segment, one of the most competitive in the region. Among the available equipment, items such as adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistant, blind spot monitoring, cross traffic alert, 360-degree camera, head-up display and native integration with Google Maps and Google Assistant in the most complete versions stand out.
The strategic role of the hatch in BYD production in Brazil
Dolphin G’s arrival in Europe is just the beginning of its international journey. BYD plans for the hybrid hatch to be produced locally at the Camaçari plant, Bahia, from 2027. This initiative aims to expand the supply of electrified vehicles manufactured in the country. The Dolphin G should occupy a relevant position in the company’s strategy, complementing the Atto 2 DM-i Flex and reinforcing the focus on plug-in hybrids with greater electric range and potentially more affordable prices than the larger models in the Song line. Thus, the European launch is not just another BYD product, but a detailed preview of what one of the manufacturer’s future national hybrids will be like, marking a new phase of its expansion in the Brazilian market.
