Mikel Merino has overcome a stress fracture in his right foot that threatened his participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup and is now ready to help Spain in their quest for a second world title.

The Arsenal midfielder fractured his foot in January, underwent surgery and lived through months of uncertainty about his presence in the tournament that starts on June 11 in North America. He returned to the pitch in May and secured a place on Luis de la Fuente’s list.

Child’s dream that comes true at age 30

For Merino, the World Cup has always represented the pinnacle of football. He remembers watching the legends on television as a child and now, at 30, he is experiencing his debut in the competition after winning Euro 2024 and the Premier League.

“It’s a strange feeling. On the one hand, the nervousness of the debut. On the other, the maturity of someone who is 30 years old”, said the player in an interview with FIFA. He highlights that the experience helps to treat each game calmly, without losing gratitude for the moment.

Difficult recovery reinforces value of opportunity

The injury raised real doubts. Merino even thought he would miss the tournament, especially since the next World Cup would be for 34 years. The recovery lasted around five months and required intense work with no guarantee of return.

“You appreciate it more when you almost lose. I learned to be grateful for each step, for the smell of the grass, for training with my teammates”, he said. This journey increased his motivation within a group that he considers strong and in which he feels like an important part.

From underdog to real contender for the title

Spain arrives at the World Cup as European Cup champions and with a different status than last year. Previously seen as a surprise, it is now treated as one of the favorites due to recent victories and the quality of the squad.

Merino recognizes the change: “Now everyone sees us as candidates. This should give us confidence, but without accommodation. Any team can beat us on a good day.” He believes that playing the best football allows him to overcome any opponent.

Union and family environment as a big differentiator

The midfielder praises the work of Luis de la Fuente, whom he has known since youth football. The coach prioritizes “good people” and creates a collective environment that surpasses individual talent.

“Our greatest strength is the family we form. We play together, we support each other in difficult times. In the locker room, 15 players playing cards and video games shows the atmosphere”, he describes. This combination of youth, experience and rapport is seen as a recipe for success.

The 2026 World Cup starts in a few days and Spain, with Merino recovered, is looking to turn the good moment into a title.
