A Reddit user shared the unboxing of a PlayStation 1 that has remained sealed since the 1990s. The images show the box still with all the factory seals intact, revealing a console in an exceptional state of preservation after more than three decades.
The console, Sony’s initial model, arrived in Japan on December 3, 1994 and in the United States in September 1995. The version shown in the post corresponds to the SCPH-1000, which marked the company’s debut in the video game market and helped to sell more than 100 million units throughout its useful life.
In the published photos, the author details each stage of the opening. The box lid is carefully removed, exposing still-packaged manuals, cables, controller and the console itself without any signs of use or wear. Everything indicates that the unit has never been turned on since manufacturing.
European demo disc attracts attention
Among the items, the “PlayStation Demo 1” disc in the PAL version stands out. The box seal confirms the inclusion of demos of Ridge Racer, Destruction Derby, Wipeout 2097 and Tekken 2 — titles that helped consolidate the console in the European market in the early years.
Ridge Racer was one of the games launching in Japan in 1994 and served to demonstrate the hardware’s 3D rendering power. Destruction Derby, from 1995, explored collision physics, while Wipeout 2097 and Tekken 2 arrived later and became references in the initial catalog.
Discussion about conservation and value
In the Reddit comments, the conversation revolved around the conservation status and potential value of sealed items. Sealed classic consoles often fetch high prices at auction, especially when the box and seals are authentic. Models like the SCPH-1000 are also valued by collectors for technical characteristics, such as the audio DAC considered superior in some analyses.
The author did not reveal whether he intends to keep the console as a collection piece or put it to work. The record now joins other rare cases of hardware preserved unused since launch, fueling the nostalgia of a generation that experienced the transition to 3D games.
