After a hiatus of two decades, the Czechia national team returns to the FIFA World Cup in 2026, presenting itself with a new official nomenclature. This change in the world championship calls and tables accompanies a change in identity at a global level for the nation, which is now designated as Czechia in the sporting scene, instead of the Czech Republic, seeking a more concise and direct form.
A notable match in the context of this transition was the confrontation between the Republic of Korea and the then Czech Republic, which took place in Guadalajara. The game, whose best moments were shown, took place on June 11, a Thursday, at 8 pm, in the local time zone.
It is important to emphasize that the decision to adopt Czechia does not imply the founding of a new nation. Instead, it represents the officialization of its abbreviated geographic name, a common practice among several countries.
This procedure reflects a standard already established elsewhere in the world. For example, we everyday refer to “France” or “Brazil”, even though their formal and full names are “French Republic” and “Federative Republic of Brazil”, respectively.
The primary intention behind this initiative was for the shorter term to be formally incorporated into the records of the United Nations (UN) and other important international entities.
Such standardization gave the name essential support for its acceptance in a unified manner by several organizations, including those in the sports sector. The Czech Football Federation, for example, made the change official in 2022.
After this formalization, the name Tchéquia began to be used in UEFA tournaments and, later, it was definitively included on platforms and competitions under the auspices of FIFA.
This change aims to bring the country’s name closer to the way football fans refer to it on a daily basis, facilitating the communication of information, without disregarding the vast and rich history that the nation accumulates in the sporting scene.
