The Google Wallet app now includes functionality that simplifies activating Touchless ID, a TSA PreCheck feature. This innovation aims to provide faster passage through airport security, eliminating the need for interruptions.
This digital identification system offers an efficient alternative to physically presenting documents at airports. Although availability is still limited in some terminals and by certain airlines, Touchless ID is expected to establish itself as standard procedure, optimizing the experience of millions of travelers annually and reducing bottlenecks at checkpoints.
Google reported that signing up for Touchless ID will be possible directly through Google Wallet. Interested parties must first integrate their boarding passes into the application, have TSA PreCheck approval and, additionally, set up a unique ID Pass on the device itself. If these requirements are met, the option to enable Touchless ID will appear on the digital card.
The Touchless ID verification phase, conducted by TSA PreCheck, occurs external to Google Wallet. However, Google’s tool makes it easier to discover and sign up for the contactless ID system, a considerable benefit given that many airline apps make this function less accessible, making it difficult to sign up upon arrival at the airport.
According to information released by Google, a “Get Started” button will appear for qualified users after registering their boarding pass. Upon completion of the procedure and approval by the TSA, a badge will be displayed on the digital boarding pass, serving as quick proof of eligibility.
Eventually, passengers who use Touchless ID activated via Google Wallet will no longer need to open the application for validation.
This functionality aligns with Google’s strategy of expanding compatibility with various forms of digital identification, covering passports and other official documents issued by government authorities.
