Neymar withdraws from agreement with FC Cincinnati, but remains open to proposals from other MLS clubs
The player Neymar, currently at Santos, chose to end talks for a possible transfer to FC Cincinnati. The United States team was interested in signing the striker from 2027 onwards. The news was initially reported by the portal “The Athletic”, the sports section of “The New York Times”.
According to the vehicle, Neymar expressed dissatisfaction with the slowness of the negotiation process and the absence of a formal offer from the Cincinnati club.
Even with the retreat, the report from “The Athletic” indicates that the athlete remains interested in playing in Major League Soccer (MLS), the main football competition in the United States, as long as there is a suitable proposal from another team.
Neymar’s contract with Santos is valid until December 2026, which allows him to sign a pre-agreement with any other team from June 30th.
In a statement made earlier this year, the striker even mentioned the possibility of retiring from professional football in 2027.
Last April, Marcelo Teixeira, president of Santos, stated that he was not aware of any interest from FC Cincinnati in Neymar. The Santos president reiterated the board’s desire for the player to remain and fulfill his contract until the end.
Wearing the Santos shirt this season, Neymar participated in 15 games, scoring six goals and contributing four assists. He recently made his first appearance at this year’s World Cup for the Brazilian national team, coming on in the second half of the victorious clash against Scotland last Wednesday.
The North American football league has been notable, in recent years, for its heavy investment in the acquisition of big names in international football. This strategy aims not only to raise the technical level, but also to expand the championship’s global visibility, attracting stars such as Argentine Lionel Messi and Uruguayan Luis Suárez, who currently play for Inter Miami.
In addition to them, MLS has already received or is in the process of receiving other renowned talents, including Germans Thomas Müller (Vancouver), Timo Werner (San Jose) and Marco Reus (LA Galaxy), South Korean Son Heung-min (LAFC), Argentine Rodrigo De Paul (Inter Miami) and French Antoine Griezmann (Orlando City). More recently, Brazilian midfielder Casemiro also signed a contract with Inter Miami, reinforcing the championship’s upward trend.
