She added that Jian changmaensis was the only dinosaur found at the site that was not a bird, was carnivorous and significantly larger than all other finds.

The name Jian changmaensis draws inspiration from both Chinese mythology and regional geography. “Jian” refers to a one-winged bird from Chinese legends, while “Changma” refers to the basin in Gansu province where the fossil was discovered.

Although initially described in a 2010 paper, later analysis of the arm and shoulder elements classified it as a distinct species. The researchers noted several anatomical differences, such as an elongated coracoid bone, uniquely shaped humerus structures that make up the elbow, and a peculiar opening in the radius, probably linked to the passage of blood vessels.

Even though it is not classified as a bird, the animal displayed surprisingly bird-like characteristics. As O’Connor mentioned in an interview with Science News journalist Aaron Tremper:

“these characteristics are very similar to those of birds.”

Scientists calculate that the animal was approximately the size of a barn owl and was possibly covered with long feathers along its limbs, which gave it a four-winged appearance. However, researchers suggest that the dinosaur probably did not have the ability to fly. Instead, their form of locomotion may have been similar to behaviors still observed in contemporary ecosystems.
