The WhatsApp application has started testing a long-awaited feature: its own cloud storage solution for backups. This innovation can now be accessed in the most recent beta version, exclusive to iPhones.

This update will allow users to opt out of the 5 GB of free space provided by Apple in iCloud. For many, this capacity proved insufficient, especially for storing media such as photos and videos.

Although WhatsApp initially offers only 2 GB of free storage in its cloud, the expectation is that Meta, the parent company, will adopt more affordable prices for additional space plans, seeking to be more competitive in the market.

According to data from the price list in the United States, a 50 GB plan in the WhatsApp cloud could cost around US$0.99, equivalent to approximately R$5.14.

The app highlights that its proprietary cloud solution will feature full encryption and simplify data migration between different platforms, eliminating dependency on Google Drive or iCloud.

Historically, incompatibility between these services made it considerably difficult for users to transition from the iOS ecosystem to Android, a problem that the new cloud aims to solve.

It is important to note that, at the moment, this functionality is restricted to the beta program. There is no set date for its availability in the stable version of WhatsApp for all users.
