The arrival of the long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2 in stores revealed a slower pace of sales when compared to its direct predecessor. Preliminary data from several commercial centers around the world indicate that, although the new video game has registered a significant output, the volume in the first months did not surpass the historical mark established by the first version of the device in March 2017. This scenario raises deep questions about the current situation in the electronic games industry and consumer behavior.

Initial surveys focused on key territories, such as North America, Europe and Japan, show a similar consumption pattern in all these regions. Experts in the financial sector were already projecting a slight retraction in purchases, justifying the drop due to the saturation of the segment and the instabilities of the global economy. Still, the result raises an alarm in the halls of the Japanese giant, which is betting all its money on the new equipment to continue the empire built by the Switch family, whose installed base exceeds the impressive mark of 140 million units sold.

Even with a slower pace, the new generation console managed to surpass the barrier of 10 million devices sold globally by the end of the first quarter of 2026. This is a gigantic commercial milestone for any newly launched technology product. The manufacturer’s biggest obstacle now is not letting the public’s interest cool down, creating strategies to convince the old fan base to migrate platforms, while at the same time trying to attract new players with new features and a strong catalog.

Commercial performance in key global territories

In the United States, considered the main thermometer for the video game industry, the holiday period between November and December 2025 saw a drop of approximately 35% in sales of the Switch 2 compared to the 2017 model’s debut window. Circana consultancy highlighted that the device led hardware sales during the season, but the total volume was far from the most optimistic projections. The main reason given for this slowdown was the absence of a game with a colossal impact on day one, a role that was masterfully fulfilled by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in the past. Factors such as the higher launch price and strong competition from other platforms also weighed on consumers’ pockets.

The European panorama followed a similar line, presenting variations depending on the country analyzed. The United Kingdom saw a 16% reduction in the volume of consoles sold in the first two months, while France suffered a greater blow, with a decline of almost 30% compared to the year the original version debuted. Analysts from the European continent estimate that reversing this situation will depend on more aggressive advertising campaigns and impeccable software localization. The brand has a history of strong appeal in the region, but changing consumer habits require a renewed approach for the system to consolidate itself as the favorite option among both the casual public and more dedicated players.

Reception of the new hardware among Japanese gamers

In Japan, the manufacturer’s birthplace, excitement about the launch also proved to be more subdued than projections indicated. Business volume in the debut year was around 11% below the record set by the first hybrid model. During the initial nine weeks on the shelves, the new video game reached the mark of 1.32 million units purchased by the Japanese public, a number that matches, but does not surpass, the 1.39 million devices sold in the same period of time in 2017.

Although the numerical difference seems small, it carries enormous weight within a market known for its extreme loyalty to local brands and high competitiveness. The Japanese’s historical preference for portable experiences and the arrival of titles with a strong cultural appeal, such as franchises like Monster Hunter and Pokémon, helped sustain the good results. However, this strength was not enough to break the historic barrier
