Blizzard officially revealed Diablo 5 on September 12, 2026, during the opening day of BlizzCon, scheduling the action role-playing game for release in autumn 2029. The upcoming installment advances the franchise narrative by moving the primary timeline one hundred years forward from the events depicted in the previous title.

Creative director Joe Shelly confirmed that the realm of Sanctuary now sits under the complete authority of Diablo. The lord of hell destroyed established civilizations across the realm, leaving shattered survivor populations in perpetual flight. Players face harsh conditions.

Sanctuary falls under direct rule of the lord of terror

Narrative designer Jennifer Helper explained that the studio created a much bleaker atmosphere where the surviving fragments of humanity constantly retreat from demonic armies while battling ruthlessly for remaining patches of scorched land with whatever weapons or tools they find. Helper noted that this century-long transition places the antagonist squarely in control of the world.

Company records also list the development project under the Roman numeral styling of Diablo V. Developers intend to provide players with concrete motivations to combat the hazards dominating this era of darkness. The creative team structured these survival encounters around systemic environmental hazards. Blizzard presented these thematic directions to attendees during the showcase.

The presentation took place during the main stage events at BlizzCon in September 2026. Studio leadership used the convention to formally outline the future trajectory of the entire franchise.

Blizzard outlines ongoing expansion plans for Diablo 4

Development of the fifth entry proceeds alongside established content schedules for Diablo 4, which launched in 2023. The fourth game released the Lord of Hatred expansion in April. Blizzard plans to deploy the Amazon character class during the first half of 2027.

The company set the Switch 2 edition of Diablo 4 for launch on September 15, 2026, granting hardware adopters access to existing content ahead of the Amazon update. This release expands the software to an additional hardware ecosystem.
