Video game developer Treyarch announced plans to develop an unannounced project as the team concludes its two-year cycle on Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 ahead of the Season 6 launch on September 17. Studio leaders confirmed the shift in a broadcast to players detailing future production plans.

Kevin Drew outlines a shift away from recent releases

Design director Kevin Drew stated that the studio is ready to build something that nobody has ever experienced before following work on the two consecutive titles.

Drew described the departure from the subseries as a bittersweet goodbye during a studio presentation. “This is a bittersweet goodbye, but I think over the last two years, we’ve learned a lot,” Drew explained while confirming that his team intends to create fresh mechanics rather than repeating formulas developed across the latest production period for the brand. The developer will track the Season 6 update on September 17 before fully redeploying its staff.

Two consecutive installments brought major mechanical changes

Co-studio head Yale Miller pointed to Black Ops 6 in 2024 and Black Ops 7 in 2025 as major production benchmarks for the team. The studio implemented technical additions across those two releases.

  • Omnimovement mechanics designed to reshape multiplayer pacing
  • Endgame features expanded across recent updates
  • Zombies modes built alongside partner teams

Miller explained that the group engaged in regular communication with players while monitoring progression systems and cosmetic camo unlocks. “We are extremely proud and extremely excited for what we were able to deliver,” Miller stated regarding the two recent game launches. The team will evaluate player feedback from these titles. The developer moves forward.

Support partners helped deliver content across both titles

Raven collaborated with Treyarch to supply maps, zombie experiences, and seasonal game modes during the two-year cycle.

Miller thanked external partner studios for maintaining continuous live operations across the two releases. Studio leadership highlighted that collaborative testing allowed both developers to refine gameplay systems throughout 2024 and 2025.

Modern Warfare 4 prepares for launch under Activision

Infinity Ward will release Modern Warfare 4 later this year while Treyarch personnel participate in external playtests for the upcoming title. Parent company Microsoft and Xbox division head Asha Sharma manage the wider franchise roadmap across multiple studios, including Sledgehammer and Raven. Treyarch staff members will remain active online throughout Season 6 and into the deployment of Modern Warfare 4.
