Surprise stage appearance during final months
Botan made an unscheduled stage appearance at the Tenma Tenjin Hanjotei theater in Osaka during an October 2024 event marking the 55th career anniversary of Katsura Kobunshi. He stated before attendees that he continued performing on stage even while coughing up blood due to advanced cancer. Medical staff had previously projected that he had only three months left to live.

Born in Kagawa Prefecture on April 12, 1948, the entertainer studied fast-paced comedic delivery under the mentorship of veteran duo Nakata Daimaru and Raketto. He disrupted the conservative aesthetic of traditional comedy during the 1970s by appearing on stage in denim jeans rather than customary formal clothing. This presentation style attracted a major following of female fans and established the duo as modern youth icons in Japanese comedy.
