King Charles III, accompanied by the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, visited Nansledan, reinforcing the monarchy and the British government’s commitment to sustainable development and community innovation. Located in Cornwall, Nansledan is a planned expansion project designed to create a modern and environmentally responsible community. Spanning 540 acres, the development integrates low-carbon housing, commercial infrastructure, and community spaces aimed at strengthening residents’ connections with their environment. The visit included stops at Newquay Orchard, Nansledan School, and the Kew An Lergh development, locations that embody the project’s mission to promote a sustainable and economically viable lifestyle.

The Nansledan project began in 2014 and reflects a shared vision between the King and the Duchy of Cornwall. Its objective is to create a self-sufficient environment where residences, businesses, and public spaces coexist in an integrated manner.

Beyond fostering sustainable urban development, Nansledan seeks to boost the local economy by providing employment opportunities and promoting the growth of small businesses and community initiatives.

The impact of Newquay Orchard on community and sustainability

Newquay Orchard is one of the fundamental pillars of Nansledan’s sustainable development. Inspired by nature, this community space goes beyond food production, offering career guidance, wellness sessions, and cultural events for local residents. During his visit, King Charles III explored the Community Kitchen, where volunteers and staff work to develop skills and enhance employability.

The orchard’s impact in Nansledan can be measured through concrete numbers. In 2024, Newquay Orchard produced 6.8 tons of chemical-free food using agroecological methods. Of this production, over 3,000 bags of vegetables were distributed to 135 customers participating in the sustainable agriculture program, while 156 bags were provided to patients of the Watergate Primary Care Network to support diabetes treatment and promote healthy eating.

The orchard also serves as a learning space for ecological farming practices. With a sustainable production model, it demonstrates how agriculture can be an ally in environmental conservation and food security.

Nansledan School: An educational model based on sustainability

Nansledan School plays a crucial role in community development by integrating sustainability into its curriculum. Officially inaugurated in March 2020, the institution serves more than 300 students and uses a teaching model focused on active discovery and experiential learning.

The school’s architecture reflects Nansledan’s environmental principles. The building was designed by the Duchy of Cornwall to promote energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Classrooms encourage students to participate in outdoor activities, strengthening the link between education and environmental conservation.

The school’s curriculum encourages students to engage in practical projects that teach the importance of environmental conservation and responsible resource use. During the visit, King Charles III and his delegation observed some of these activities and spoke with teachers and students about the importance of sustainable development.

Kew An Lergh: A hub for business and local innovation

The Kew An Lergh development symbolizes Nansledan’s economic dynamism, hosting various businesses and essential services for the community. The location houses innovative businesses such as the Naturally Learning nursery, the vintage clothing store Love of Lemons, and the digital marketing agency Solve Web Media. Additionally, Kew An Lergh includes wellness spaces such as The Loft yoga studio and the Sabzi café, which welcomed the King and political leaders during their visit.

The presence of diverse businesses in Nansledan reflects the project’s intention to create a self-sufficient environment where residents can work and access essential goods and services without extensive travel. This model helps reduce carbon emissions and strengthens the local economy.

Before concluding their visit, King Charles III and his delegation observed ‘Phase 8A,’ the latest stage of Nansledan’s construction project. This expansion aims to deliver up to 3,700 new homes, with over 840 already completed.

The importance of sustainable urban planning

The concept of sustainable cities has gained increasing prominence globally, and Nansledan stands as a practical example of this approach. The integration of housing, work, leisure, and social infrastructure reduces the need for extensive commuting and enhances residents’ quality of life.

Additionally, the development’s sustainability-focused planning prioritizes biodiversity preservation. Buildings are designed to minimize environmental impact, using eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient technologies.
