Samsung Electronics launched the Galaxy XR, the first headset powered by Android XR operating system, developed with Google and Qualcomm. The device goes on sale Tuesday in the US and South Korea starting at $1,799, positioning it as a more affordable alternative to Apple’s $3,499 Vision Pro. The platform combines Gemini AI with environmental awareness for voice, hand, and eye-based interactions.

The virtual global event marks the start of Android XR ecosystem, with plans for lightweight AR glasses in the future. Galaxy XR supports millions of Google Play apps immediately, including reimagined Google services and new XR-native experiences.

Weighing 545 grams with a 302-gram external battery, it delivers up to 2.5 hours of video playback. Powered by Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 processor, 16GB RAM, and 256GB storage, it features Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity.

Galaxy XR display and tracking specs

The headset uses dual 4K micro-OLED displays with 3,552 x 3,840 pixel resolution per eye, totaling 27 megapixels across both screens.

Field of view reaches 109 degrees horizontally, with six cameras enabling 12ms latency passthrough for real-world video overlay.

Audio comes from six microphones capturing voice commands and ambient sound for spatial awareness.

Weight distribution across forehead and nape supports extended wear sessions.

Gemini AI system integration

Gemini processes visual context from cameras during video playback, answering questions about on-screen athletes or landmarks instantly.

The AI handles cross-app actions like window organization or scheduling without manual navigation.

Support for OpenXR, WebXR, and Unity standards accelerates developer content creation for the platform.

Galaxy XR runs optimized Google apps alongside streaming and gaming titles from day one.

  • Streaming: Crunchyroll, HBO Max, Peacock with 180/360-degree YouTube content
