Netflix announced the premiere of the documentary series Sean Combs: The project comes after the trial that resulted in a prison sentence for the hip-hop mogul.

The documentary, divided into four episodes, explores the empire built by Combs in music and the associated crimes.

Rise in hip-hop and empire building

Sean Combs founded Bad Boy Records in the 1990s, boosting artists like The Notorious B.I.G. and Mary J. Blige.

The label popularized hip-hop on the mainstream charts and generated billions in revenue. Combs expanded into fashion and media, becoming a cultural icon.

Accusations and court case

Investigations against Combs began in 2023 with allegations of sexual violence.

In September 2024, he was arrested in Nova York on suspicion of sex trafficking and extortion. The trial began in May 2025.

The jury acquitted Combs of sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy in July 2025. No did, however, convict him of two counts of transportation for prostitution.

The sentence, announced on October 3, 2025, set 50 months in prison, equivalent to four years and two months, plus a fine of US$500,000.

Combs has already served part of his sentence since pre-trial detention and is expected to be released in May 2028, with a possible reduction for good behavior.

50 Cent involvement in production

Curtis Jackson, the 50 Cent, took over executive production in December 2023. The rivalry between the rappers goes back years and came to the fore during the trial.

Jackson shared the official poster on social media, highlighting the exclusive material.

The series includes interviews with former Combs associates, childhood friends and employees.

Unreleased material and exclusive interviews

The documentary features never-before-aired videos and reports from people close to Combs’s circle.

  • Interviews with former employees reveal internal dynamics at Bad Boy.
  • Testimonials from artists released by the label contextualize the cultural impact.
  • Archive footage shows events such as Combs’s annual parties in Miami.

These elements aim to balance professional success with allegations of abuse.

Expectations for the public reception

Netflix describes the series as an examination of the doomed tycoon, with a focus on authentic perspectives.

Stapleton emphasized a commitment to giving voice to complex narratives, spanning decades of career.

The teaser released on November 25, 2025 sparked debate about hip-hop’s legacy.

Management and team details

Alexandria Stapleton, winner of Emmy, directs the project for the first time in partnership with Jackson.

The production includes a team of G-Unit Film and Television, a studio of 50 Cent.

The focus remains on documented facts, without future projections.
