A prototype of the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold, the company’s first tri-fold smartphone, has emerged in images that reveal a four-rear camera setup. The leak occurred in a LinkedIn post from an Samsung executive, who was holding the device during an internal test. The final version, recently announced, only maintains three sensors on the rear.

This discovery highlights the development process of the Samsung, which fine-tuned the hardware ahead of the official launch scheduled for December 12th on the Coreia of the Sul. The prototype, captured in an informal moment, shows identical circular cutouts on the back, with the fourth element thinner than the others. Especialistas indicate that the change aims to optimize the device’s slim design.

Samsung plans to expand availability of the Galaxy Z TriFold to markets including China, Taiwan, Singapura, Emirados Árabes Unidos and Estados Unidos in the coming months. The device measures just 3.9mm at its thinnest point when unfolded, thanks to a titanium and aluminum frame.

  • Main adjustments to the prototype: inclusion of an extra sensor for testing photographic versatility.
  • Final configuration: 200 MP main sensor, 12 MP ultra-wide-angle and 10 MP telephoto lens with 3x zoom.
  • Probable reason for reduction: balance between performance and reduced chassis thickness.

Prototype photo setup

The prototype image shows a rear module with four aligned circular openings, contrasting with the triple arrangement of the commercial version. The fourth cutout, positioned next to the others, suggests an additional lens of similar diameter, possibly dedicated to functions such as macro or depth.

Engineers at Samsung carried out multiple tests to refine the system, prioritizing integration with the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor.

Final specifications confirmed

The Galaxy Z TriFold adopts a 200 MP main sensor with optical stabilization and multi-directional autofocus on the rear. The ultra-wide lens captures 12 MP with a wide angle, while the telephoto lens offers 10 MP and 3x optical zoom.

Two 10 MP front cameras serve the internal and external screens, with fields of view of 100° and 80°, respectively. The set supports 8K recording and advanced night modes, built into the One UI 8 software on Android 16.

The 5,600 mAh battery, divided into three cells, guarantees autonomy for prolonged use on the 10-inch screen. Carregamento reaches 45W via USB-C, with 15W wireless and reverse support.

These components have been validated in labs for compatibility with the triple format, avoiding overload on foldable hardware.

Development process revealed

Samsung started the Z TriFold project more than two years ago, focusing on dual hinges for an expandable 10-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X to 120 Hz display. Initial Prototipagens explored variations in the camera module to maximize utility in multitasking scenarios such as large-screen photo editing.

Internal testing involved teams in laboratories at Coreia of Sul, where the fourth sensor was evaluated to improve artificial intelligence in image processing. The reduction decision came after cost-benefit analyses, keeping the weight at 309 grams and thickness at 12.9 mm when folded.

The structure uses polymer reinforced with ceramic fiberglass on the back, combined with IP48 protection against water and dust. Dobradiças in titanium guarantee stability in more than 200 thousand opening cycles.

Samsung DeX mode allows for up to four virtual workspaces, each with five simultaneous apps, optimized for the smartphone-tablet hybrid format.

Launch and initial availability

Pre-orders for the Galaxy Z TriFold begin on December 9th at select stores in Coreia and Sul, with a starting price equivalent to around US$2,443. The package includes protective case, 45W charger and data cable.

Global expansion takes place in the first quarter of 2026, prioritizing regions with high demand for premium devices. Samsung offers a 50% discount on screen repairs for first-time buyers, valid for one year.

Storage versions come in 512 GB and 1 TB, with 16 GB of RAM in all configurations. Cor available: Crafted Black, with a fingerprint-resistant matte finish.

The device runs Android 16 out of the box, with updates guaranteed for seven years, including monthly security patches for the first four years.

Screen and multitasking features

The 6.5-inch external screen covers the central panel when folded, allowing use as a conventional smartphone. When unfolded, it reveals a total of 10 inches, with adaptable resolution for high definition content.

The “G-style” folding system protects the internal screen by closing it, wrapping it between the side panels. Sensores detect incorrect movements and emit vibrating alerts to prevent damage.

Integration with Gemini Live allows multimodal commands, such as real-time image analysis via camera. Usuários can split the screen into three independent apps, ideal for remote productivity.

Support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 speeds transfers, while the side fingerprint sensor facilitates quick unlocking.

Comparison with previous models

The Z TriFold evolves the Galaxy Z Fold 7 by adding a second hinge, increasing the display area by 50% without compromising portability. The battery grows from 4,400 mAh to 5,600 mAh, reflecting the demands of larger screens.

Rear cameras maintain consistency with the Galaxy S25 line, using the same 200 MP main sensor for photographic parity. The thickness reduced to 3.9 mm surpasses rivals like the Huawei Mate XT in compact design.

Software updates emphasize stability in foldables, with extensive testing in everyday use scenarios. The focus on durability includes certification for drops of up to 1.5 meters on hard surfaces.

Innovations in foldable hardware

Engineers incorporated double rails into the hinges for even weight distribution, reducing wear over time. The Advanced Armor aluminum alloy reinforces the frame, while ceramic fibers on the back absorb impacts.

The custom Snapdragon 8 Elite processor optimizes power consumption in expanded modes, achieving up to 12 hours of full-screen video. Memória 16GB RAM supports lag-free 4K video editing.

Connectivity includes UWB for accurate tracking of accessories such as Bluetooth keyboards. The device weighs less than tablets of similar size, making it easier to transport in standard bags.
